The 2021 rendition of the Madison Bowl was a hard-fought 34-28 overtime win for James Clemens High School over Bob Jones High School. Both teams have a lot of talent on offense which gave the fan an exciting matchup, but great players on defense kept this game from being a shootout. Let’s look at some impact players on defense that really stood out Friday night:
S [player_tooltip player_id="131886" first="Jamal" last="Mayers"], James Clemens High School - C/O 2023
5’10" 165lbs
Jamal made 1st Team All-State as a sophomore in the 7A classification last year, and his performance Friday night looks like he is on track to earn those honors again as a junior. Teams have taken notice of Mayers’ coverage skills, so they rarely throw the ball to his side of the field. However, he doesn’t let that stop him from having an impact on the game. Mayers is one of the hardest-hitting DBs I have watched in person. He made five solo tackles (that I counted) against very elusive runners. In my opinion, Jamal is extremely underrated in his recruitment and is one of the top DBs in the state of Alabama.

DL/NT [player_tooltip player_id="125470" first="Cedric" last="Jackson"] II, Bob Jones High School - C/O 2022
6’3" 320lbs
[player_tooltip player_id="125470" first="Cedric" last="Jackson"] was a man in the trenches that really stood out. Jackson has a high motor and had an impact in the game against a team that has a really good offensive line. Ced uses his hands to shed blocks and is great at stopping the run between the tackles. He did well to get off blocks when James Clemens used the submarine technique to block him. I believe Jackson is versatile and strong enough to play a 0, 1, or 2 technique in college

S Kameron Barnett, James Clemens High School - C/O 2022
6’0" 180lbs
Barnett showed his instinct early in the game with a pick-6 early in the second quarter. He punched out the ball to force a fumble later in the game, and he was involved in multiple pass breakups. He played with great instincts throughout the game, and he flashed really good speed throughout the contest. He has the size and ability to really support the run game. More performances like the one against Bob Jones will really put him on the radar of multiple programs.

DB/ATH Cosey Scarebrook, Bob Jones High School - C/O 2022
6’2" 180lbs
Scarebrook had a great night on defense with 8 tackles, 3 PBUs, 1 blocked kick. However, his size is what is really appealing as a recruit. He is long with really good speed. I believe he could be an effective DB in college, but he looks like he could be a player that grows into other positions on the field as well. I know that college coaches are looking for versatility and Scarebrook fits that bill.
