Continue ReadingWauseon is a great example of a blue-collar team that is usually well-coached and wins games that it sometimes shouldn’t. Last year, in the middle of the pandemic they won 6 games and went 6-2 overall. Just a few years ago the Indians found themselves looking for a new leader on and off the field due to a sudden change that they weren’t expecting. They’ve done a great job redirecting and keeping the ship straight. A few years removed of those changes and they’re very excited for the 2021 season.
The Indians are led by Head Coach Shawn Moore. Moore has been on the staff while but he was an assistant coach prior to becoming the head man. He is a graduate of Wauseon and understands the roots and how important their traditions are. This will be his 3rd season as the lead man and last year he took the Covid punches and they rolled with them.
The Indians averaged over 34 PPG last year and had an identical home and away record of 3-1. They started their season 5-0 before losing 2 of their last 3 games. However, despite faltering some in the middle of the season, the Indians won against Bryan on the road to close out the year.
1 player I want to highlight for the Indians is Bryson Stump. Stump will be playing both ways for the Indians. He plays both RB and MLB. He has a nice frame and comes in at 5’11” and 195 lbs. At RB he runs with great power. He always has his shoulders forward which can be a bad thing sometimes. It causes him to be top-heavy and stumble sometimes. However, he’s a decent back and they use him appropriately. On defense, they use him at all 3 LB spots but they prefer to keep him on the inside. He’s not the best LB but he’s suitable. He plays hard and never gives up on plays. He’s such a good athlete naturally he still excels at a high level.
The other player I wanted to highlight is Kyle Moore. Moore is heading into his senior campaign and is ready for a challenge. Moore is 6’4″ and 257 lbs. He plays both sides of the ball, both on the line, and both on the interior side of things. He is gritty in the run game as a run blocker. He can get knocked back in the passing game. On the defensive side, he is high-energy and plays hard. He’s a good athlete and eats up a lot of space.
The Indians are looking to build on their solid 2020 season. They can start to do so in week 1 on the road against Fairview. That game is on August 20th at 7 PM. The Indians then rotate home and away games all year until they finish at Home against Bryan on October 22nd at 7 PM. Wauseon is that thorn in a lot of team’s sides. They are going to give that division trouble this year and I’m excited to see it unfold.
