2020 Review
Muskegon can often be referred to as the freight train and that it’s best to get off the tracks when they are coming. Last year, Muskegon fell short of their ultimate goal. They lost to DeWitt deep in the playoffs 14-0. Last year, the offense put up just over 34 PPG while only giving up 12 PPG. They were typically up early and often which allowed for some of their younger players to get a bunch of work.
Coaching Staff
The Big Reds are led by Shane Fairfield. Fairfield is ready to go back to a “normal” season after last year’s unprecedented season. The season was stopped and started in early January and the Big Reds had to get up and play after they thought the season was over. The expectation every year in Muskegon is to make that run deep into the playoffs and since Coach Fairfield has taken over they have pretty much done just that. As long as he is in town, you can expect that trend to continue. Fairfield knows how to coach and get the most out of his guys every Friday night.
Key Players In 2021
Julian Neely will be the starting QB for Muskegon again heading into the 2021 season. HE is 6’1″ and 195 lbs. He’s not a great athlete but he can run. He’s best in the pocket and delivering strikes. His footwork is pretty raw and could use a decent amount of work. Neely is able to sit back and look over the line to deliver a strike when and where it needs to. He’s also great at running the option plays that they run.
Myles Walton Myles Walton 5'11" | 180 lbs | DB Muskegon | 2022 State MI is going to be one of the biggest factors for the Big Reds in 2021. The 5’11″ 185 lbs WR/QB/CB plays all over the field. He lines up primarily in the slot and has great speed. They will also use him in end-arounds to keep the defense honest. He can absolutely fly and when he gets a full head of steam it’s best to watch out. He will line up at QB every now and then and that’s typically in the RedZone when they want to run some read-options.
Tamareon Oakes is one of the leaders on defense. The 6’1″ 185 lbs senior will play all over the defense. He will play at LB and CB. It just depends on the package that they are running. He has the raw athleticism to drop back in coverage or blitz the passer. They use him all over the field because of his versatility and heading into 2021 he’s going to have another major role on defense. His development as a senior will be telling on how far this defense can go.
2021 Schedule
Muskegon starts their season Friday away against East Kentwood. They then return home to face Cass Tech on September 3rd. They rotate home and away games all season before they finish their regular season at home on October 22nd at 7 PM against Zeeland East. By the time that game is on the docket, we will know how Muskegon did in 2021. The expectations are high and a lot of key players are returning. Their success is going to be earned like it is every year and Coach Fairfield will have them up for the challenge.
