Continue ReadingThe Chicago Marist RedHawks are coming into the fall season after a 4-2 spring football season. Their last full season (2019) concluded with a loss in the playoffs to Lincoln-Way East and an 8-5 record. The Chicago East Suburban Catholic Conference is one of the most competitive in Illinois. Head Coach Ron Dwczak has packed on to his schedule strength by adding strong out-of-conference opponents such as Oak Lawn Richards and Carmel Mundelein. With the Redhawk’s first month of football being played at home, and team leaders: electric quarterback Dontrell Jackson and Northwestern OL commit Danny McGuire, Marist is a team that will be competing for an 8A state championship this fall!
2021 Spring Record (4-2)
Mar 19- Niles Notre Dame (34-13)
Mar 26- Chicago Brother Rice (20-16)
Apr 3- Chicago Mt. Carmel (21-24)
Apr 10- Nazareth Academy (13-0)
Apr 16- Chicago St. Patrick (48-13)
Apr 23- Wilmette Loyola Academy (14-43)
Impact players this fall:
Dontrell Jackson (QB-2022- 5’11”-187 lb)
Dontrell Jackson is a player who has been talked about all summer. The senior quarterback has committed to Coastal Carolina and wants to finish this fall with a bang. He’s a quarterback with a quick release and isn’t afraid to sit in the pocket and sling it. With his arm and trust in himself, it will be interesting to see what Dontrell can do with his almost new group of weapons that he has been working out with this offseason.
Danny McGuire (OG-2022-6’5”-290 lb)
Tough, mean, and aggressive are all words that come to mind when describing the senior Northwestern commit. Danny McGuire started at RG for Marist in the spring and had a strong performance. He does really well down blocking on defenders and has a smooth skip pull technique.
Ryan Sims Ryan Sims 6'4" | 200 lbs | WR Marist | 2023 State IL (WR-2023-6’4”-200 lb)
This playmaker had a coming out party on the field as a sophomore receiver this spring. Surrounded by a lot of talented seniors, he seemed to pick up on their game and apply it to his own ability. Although he’s a great route runner, the thing that stood out the most was Ryan’s return ability. Every time he’s kicked a ball, Ryan has the ability to take it for 6.
Jimmy Rolder (LB-2022-6’3”-220 lb)
Jimmy Rolder is the middle backer and was the leading tackler for the Redhawks this spring. He has good size and plays zone coverage well. He disrupted the air with multiple interceptions and pass deflections. Having an every-down backer is key for any defense, and Jimmy is looking to have a monster senior year.
Other Players to Watch:
Nicholas Verzoni- Free Safety- 2022
Jamel Howard- Defensive Line- 2023
Sammy Laurencell- Corner-2022
Jaylen Johnson- Runningback-2022
2021 Fall Schedule
AUG 27– Chicago Curie
SEP 3- Oak Lawn Richards
SEP 10– Lagrange Park Nazareth Academy
SEP 17– Chicago Mt. Carmel
SEP 24– Aurora Marmion Academy
OCT 2– Wilmette Loyola Academy
OCT 8– Lombard Montini
OCT 15– Mundelein Carmel
OCT 22– Chicago Brother Rice
Games to Watch: Mt. Carmel (9/17), Loyola Academy (10/2), and Brother Rice (10/22). Mt. Carmel and Brother Rice are games to watch, due to the physical playoff nature that it brings. Marist has won or lost to these in conference teams by one possession in the past couple of years. The RedHawks had Brother Rice’s number in a 20-16 win in the spring and lost to Mt. Carmel by 3.
The game against Loyola Academy will be full of fireworks because It will be the Senior’s time for redemption. After beating Loyola Academy in the last regular full season, followed by eliminating them in the playoffs that same season, Loyola got back at them in the spring. It’s fair to say that Marist ending their spring with a loss to Loyola by double digits is a taste that they will remember up to their game in October.
