It was week zero and that showed for both teams to kick off the season as both 6A-2’s #3 Booker T Washington and 6A-1’s #9 Southmoore had some mistakes in the first half. However, Booker T Washington’s athleticism and playmaking ability was too much for the Sabercats to overcome and the Hornets headed back to to Tulsa after beating Southmoore 51-7. The Hornets got the scoring going on their first possession when they took three plays to find the end zone. Deon McKinney Jr. would score from 15 yards out and it appeared that a rout was on. We would have to wait for the rout because the Hornets would fumble, punt and have a punt blocked on their next three possessions. But Southmoore couldn’t find the end zone following those three lost possessions from the Hornets. Then the floodgates opened shortly before halftime. BTW 2023 quarterback Lathan Boone Lathan Boone Lathan Boone 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Booker T. Washington | 2023 State OK found 2023 wide receiver Micah Tease Micah Tease Micah Tease 6'1" | WR Booker T. Washington | 2023 State OK on an 87-yard touchdown to give the Hornets a 14-0 lead. 2022 kicker Jackson Marsh Jackson Marsh Jackson Marsh 6'1" | K Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK would add a 20-yard field goal as time expired to take a 17-0 lead into halftime. The Hornets would score on five of their six second half possessions. And the only one they didn’t score on came at the end of the game when they ran out the clock. First, it was Boone throwing it up to 2023 tight end Demitrius Prudom Demitrius Prudom Demitrius Prudom 6'1" | 215 lbs | TE Booker T. Washington | 2023 State OK in the back of the end zone for a 36-yard TD. After 2022 defensive back Jaden King Jaden King Jaden King 6'2" | DB Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK came up with an interception, it was a 2-play drive that ended in a Boone touchdown run from four yards out. 2024 standout Issac Covington Issac Covington Issac Covington 5'11" | 190 lbs | ATH Union | 2024 State OK would continue his big game early in the fourth quarter when he scored from a few yards out. That added to an interception he had on defense in the first half. Senior running back Ethan Washington Ethan Washington Ethan Washington 6'0" | RB Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK would score on a 37-yard touchdown and backup quarterback Isaac Fain had an 18-yard touchdown. Southmoore’s lone TD came on a 78-yard kick return after it was 51-0. The Hornets had an unbelievable balance on the offensive side of the ball. They had five players that finished with a rushing touchdown. Deon McKinney Jr. ran for 52 yards. Ethan Washington Ethan Washington Ethan Washington 6'0" | RB Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK finished with 63 yards and Issac Covington Issac Covington Issac Covington 5'11" | 190 lbs | ATH Union | 2024 State OK even added 37 yards. Wide receiver Micah Tease Micah Tease Micah Tease 6'1" | WR Booker T. Washington | 2023 State OK led a balanced effort in the receiving category as well. He had five catches for 131 yards and a touchdown. It was 2022 star Gentry Williams Gentry Williams Gentry Williams 6'0" | DB Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK ’ first game action since tearing his ACL last year. He finished with five catches for 26 yards and was lights out on defense. The Hornets were locked in on the defensive side of the ball. They gave up just a little over 100 yards of total offense and made the evening a nightmare for Southmoore quarterback Noah Peters Noah Peters Noah Peters 5'11" | QB Southmoore | 2022 State OK . The Southmoore QB was 8-20 for just 35 yards and a pair of interceptions. The Hornets were swarming throughout the secondary and it was nearly impossible to make a big play with all the speed and talent that Booker T has on the field. As we’ve mentioned before, the Hornets don’t have good numbers, but the ones they do have are some of the best in the state. The combination of Gentry Williams Gentry Williams Gentry Williams 6'0" | DB Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK , Jaden King Jaden King Jaden King 6'2" | DB Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK , Jordan Drew Jordan Drew Jordan Drew 6'1" | ATH Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK and Micah Tease Micah Tease Micah Tease 6'1" | WR Booker T. Washington | 2023 State OK in the secondary is a legitimate D1 secondary. Even throw in sophomore Issac Covington Issac Covington Issac Covington 5'11" | 190 lbs | ATH Union | 2024 State OK to that conversation. Five players that all belong at the D1 level. Good luck finding a window quarterbacks.

TURNING POINT On Booker T Washington’s fourth possession, halfway through the second quarter, a Jackson Marsh Jackson Marsh Jackson Marsh 6'1" | K Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK punt was blocked by Southmoore and the Sabercats had a chance for a scoop and score but ultimately fell on it at the Booker T Washington 27. However, the drive would stall at the Hornet 13-yard line on fourth down and the Hornets kept the Sabercats out of the end zone. Just a few plays later, Lathan Boone Lathan Boone Lathan Boone 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Booker T. Washington | 2023 State OK would find Micah Tease Micah Tease Micah Tease 6'1" | WR Booker T. Washington | 2023 State OK on the 87-yard touchdown with 1:32 left in the first half. That would put the Hornets up 14-0, they would add a field goal as time expired and head into halftime with a 17-0 lead. That was Southmoore’s shot at staying in the game and tying it up but instead, the drive stalled and the game flipped. PLAYER OF THE GAME Lathan Boone Lathan Boone Lathan Boone 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Booker T. Washington | 2023 State OK - 2023 Quarterback - Booker T Washington The junior quarterback was lights out in the season opener. As mentioned above, it’s somewhat easy to be lights out when you have the type of talent to distribute the ball to. Boone would finish the game 16-18 for 231 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was also a threat in the running game that Southmoore had to try to limit. He finished with eight carries for 21 yards and a touchdown run on a nasty option keeper where he faked the pitch to the running back, forcing the linebacker to go in that direction and we walked into the end zone. There’s no doubt that the skill players at Booker T Washington are some of the best in the state, but Boone has taken his game to another level as well. QUOTABLE Lathan Boone Lathan Boone Lathan Boone 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Booker T. Washington | 2023 State OK On His Confidence And His Receivers "It’s definitely a good feeling to just line up and see all the talent across the board. I have a lot of chemistry with these guys after working at practice and it gives me a lot of confidence going into each week. I get to keep all my guys happy. But those guys are doing all of the work, I don’t take any of the credit. Those guys are phenomenal, I really appreciate them." WHAT’S NEXT Booker T Washington: AT Del City - September 3rd Booker T Washington will be returning to the OKC area for week one as they take on Del City. The Eagles are scrimmaging this week so it will be their season opener. It will also be the first game for Robert Jones as Del City’s head coach. The Hornets were able to beat the Eagles in week one last year with a close 15-13 victory. The previous two years, they had met in the 6A-2 playoffs, with each team winning once. The Hornets won in 2018 while the Eagles won in 2019. The Hornets have a 2-1 advantage in the last three meetings but this game will be like last year, very close throughout, with a lot of talent on both sidelines. Southmoore: AT Deer Creek - September 3rd Southmoore will attempt to bounce back in week one as they travel up north to face off with Deer Creek. The Antlers are also kicking off their season this week, as they’ll play host to Edmond North. Deer Creek got the best of the Sabercats 30-24 in last season’s meeting. However, it should have been a blowout. Deer Creek was up 30-3 with about seven minutes left in the game and Southmoore would rally to have a chance in the end. However, the Antlers would get out with the victory and improve to 3-2 against Southmoore since 2016.
