With the release of the updated CA 2023 rankings, here’s an in-depth analysis of several offensive players who are climbing rankings and recruiting boards nationwide. [player_tooltip player_id="25441" first="Kadin" last="Semonza"], QB, Mission Viejo Semonza is one of the top QB’s in the 2023 class and a gifted natural passer. Possesses a well-rounded skill set for the position with his combination of athleticism and arm talent. Top end footwork and throwing mechanics, he’s smooth in his drop back and lands with a well balanced platform. Quick, fluid, and compact release he shows plus arm strength and the ability to hit his spots all over the field. Does a great job throwing with touch and mixing up velocities, love his ability to layer the ball over the second level defenders. Solid athlete that can improvise and make plays on breakdowns. Offered by San Jose State and Penn so far but is under recruited given his talent and ability. [player_tooltip player_id="25408" first="Mikey" last="Matthews"], WR, Mission Viejo Matthews is a complete receiver with his ability as a route runner, pass catcher, and playmaker after the catch. A strong route runner, he’s able to create separation using his start/stop speed and burst out of his breaks to accelerate by a defender and make himself a target. Soft hands with a good catch radius for his size, he’s able to extend and make contested receptions in traffic. Explosive athlete with the ball in his hands, he’s quick and sudden with his cuts and does a great job making defenders miss in space. With an offer from ASU, he has continued to show great year over year improvement and development, look for him to have a big senior year and see his recruiting stock on the rise. [player_tooltip player_id="25442" first="Zaire" last="Simonton"], OL, Granite Bay One of the top offensive line prospects in the state without an offer. Big, wide, and well-built frame ideal for an interior offensive lineman at 6’3” 335 lbs. Great natural power and explosiveness at the contact point, he possesses a strong base with good balance. Good fundamentals and technique especially with his hand usage, packs a strong initial punch and understands inside hand leverage when run blocking. Plays with good pad level and is an aggressive finisher at the POA. High ceiling with great developmental potential, he should see his recruitment pick up once he can showcase his ability on tape. He’s a plus athlete with good game speed and lateral quickness both as a route runner and after the catch. He competes and catches everything thrown his way using his body control and coordination to attack the ball at the highest point. Great vertical threat with his ability to come down with 50/50 balls using his length and leaping ability but also shows he can beat the defense at all three levels using his route running and athleticism to create separation. Expect for him to see a lot of targets in the Cypress offense this season and for his recruiting attention to pick up. [player_tooltip player_id="145241" first="Spencer" last="Shannon"], TE, Mater Dei Massive frame and length at 6’7” 240 lbs. with great upside and raw potential. At his size, he shows good athleticism and natural movement skills. He can bend and shows good flexibility in the hips and ankles. A dual sport athlete (baseball) he flashes good hand eye coordination and strong hands as a receiver. Capable and high effort blocker, he’s continued to develop his strength and leverage as an in-line blocking TE. Interesting prospect to project positionally at the college level due to his size and how his body will develop. He’s locked in as a major D1 recruit with offers from Minnesota and Utah State but could transition well to other positions. [player_tooltip player_id="145255" first="Alani" last="Noa"], OL, Grant Noa is one of the fastest rising OL prospects this summer with offers coming in from Wyoming, Fresno State, and Cal after an impressive performance at the Sac State camp. Big bodied at 6’4” 320 lbs. but shows good athleticism and feet for his size. He comes off the ball hard with good bend and initial quickness allowing him to be an effective second level and perimeter blocker. Extremely physical and aggressive at the POA he’s able to overpower defenders using his size and natural strength. Great ability to drive his feet through contact and sustain his block through the whistle. Recruiting is just getting started.
