Continue ReadingAnyone following HS football for a period of time will tell you that Sprague High School has a lot of tradition, and typically has been one of the better programs in the state at the 6A level, specifically out of the Valley.
This last Spring was much needed, as the Olympians finished (5-1), with their only loss coming at the end of the year to league foe and traditional power West Salem 35-21.
The Oly’s had a tough couple seasons prior to that going 4-14. Making the comeback season even more impressive was the fact that they were led by two underclassmen in QB Logan Smith Logan Smith 6'4" | 175 lbs | QB Sprague | 2022 State OR 6-4 180 22’ and all-everything athlete Drew Rodriguez Drew Rodriguez 6'2" | 200 lbs | DB Sprague | 2023 State OR 6-2 190 23’.
Statistically speaking Rodriguez was one of the most impressive kids state wide on both sides of the football, accounting for 502 yards and 6 TDs in just 6 games, averaging 25 yards per catch. As good as he was on offense, I for see him projecting as a Safety on D, with his overall physicality and athleticism. The 3* DB was ranked my #7 overall player in the state of Oregon for the 2023 class with a stock that continues to rise.
To put his talent into perspective, it’s rare for any athlete to start as a freshman at the 6A level, and he did it on both sides of the football. Earning all-conference accolades to boot. Something incredibly rare. Expect Drew to be a conference player of the year favorite over the next few seasons, projecting at the D1 level.
Add in one of the fastest rising QB’s in Oregon with Smith and Sprague is excited about the Fall. Smith did well on the 7v7 circuit and then broke out during the shortened spring season, throwing 12 TDs/3 INTs and accounting for 1,019 yards, while earning 2nd team all-state honors from PRZ.
Smith has legit size and the on-field decision making ability to draw attention from high end academic schools and potential FCS programs. A lot will be determined this next season by his film, and whether or not he can continue to pick apart secondary’s.
If the Oly’s can take that next step and win the conference title, and potentially a few playoff games, that will speak volumes about Smith and what he brings to the table.
Regardless Sprague returns two of the better athletes they have had in some time with a host of other talented kids around them. Pay attention to the Olympians this fall.
