Every Monday, we update you on all of the recruiting news from across the state. From offers to commitments and everything in between, we’ll have you covered. This week, prospects continued traveling all over the country, visiting schools and attending camps. We saw plenty of offers extended to prospects in the 2022 and 2023 classes. We also saw two prospects earn their first offer and one ’22 linebacker announce his commitment. As always, you can follow us on Twitter to stay up to date from the moment an offer or commitment happens. @PrepRedzoneOK
THIS WEEK’S TOP STORIES
Commitment Alert!
Tahlequah 2022 linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="114810" first="Eli" last="McWilliams"] announced his commitment last Monday on Twitter when he gave a verbal to Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane were the first to offer McWilliams when they extended one to him back in February. That started a nice run for him as he had picked up several P5 offers over the last few months but has decided to stay close to home. McWilliams is one of the better linebacker prospects in the state and came in at #40 overall in our recent 2022 Ranking Update.
McWilliams is the eleventh prospect in the state’s 2022 class to give a verbal commitment. Last week, Putnam City North defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="101400" first="Jaleel" last="Johnson"] committed to Oklahoma State, putting the class into double digits. However, McWilliams is the first Tulsa commit in this year’s class. The Golden Hurricane’s recent recruiting classes have been somewhat light on in-state talent. A verbal from McWilliams is a good start but this class has some serious talent at all positions that could help TU going forward.
First Offer Alert!
Two prospects earned their first offers and both were along the line of scrimmage. We’ll start with the 2022 class and on the offensive line with Choctaw’s Alton Robinson, who was offered by New Mexico. Robinson is an OL prospect that should pick up more interest as we go further into summer and into fall. He’s part of arguably the best offensive line group in the state with the Yellowjackets and he can hold his own along that unit. Don’t be surprised if this sparks a run of offers for the talented Yellowjacket.
On the other side of the line of scrimmage you have Mustang 2023 defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="38794" first="Kaden" last="Jones"] picking up an offer from Central Michigan. Jones is a prospect that we’ve liked for about a year now and things are starting to come together for him. You could tell at this time last year that Jones had the physical traits to be one of the more dominant defensive linemen in the state’s 2023 class and he’s starting to show it. Central Michigan won’t be the only school that has interest in the physical and dominating defensive lineman from Mustang this offseason.
Johnson Earns All American Invite
Mustang 2023 standout [player_tooltip player_id="38777" first="Jacobe" last="Johnson"] has had an interesting start to his recruitment as he’s been offered by big programs for basketball and football. Last week, Johnson earned another opportunity, this time on the football field as he was invited to participate in the 2023 Under Armour All American game. Johnson is clearly one of the best athletes in the state and eventually he might have to choose between football and basketball but that day is far away. Johnson took another step to becoming one of the better corners in the state this spring as he took his game to the next level.
Malaska Picks Up Two More Offers
Bethany 2022 standout [player_tooltip player_id="101401" first="Jocelyn" last="Malaska"] has had a very busy offseason with offers, camps, visits and virtual tours with programs all over the country. Things got even busier last week as he picked up two more offers and put his total into double digits. Texas Tech and Hawaii each offered the Bethany standout. We wrote about Malaska over the weekend in our 2022 Athlete Breakdown how this might be the last time we list Malaska as an athlete because it appears that his natural position is as a cornerback on the defensive side of the ball. It should also be mentioned that in addition to all of his offseason football activities, he’s also a standout soccer player as well.
OSU Offers Another Santa Fe Wolf
Anyone who’s followed recruiting over the last five to ten years knows that Oklahoma State loves Edmond Santa Fe. They have a nice pipeline going from Santa Fe to Stillwater and they’re hoping to cash in again on their recent offer. The Cowboys offered Santa Fe 2022 tight end [player_tooltip player_id="101405" first="Tabry" last="Shettron"]. The Santa Fe tight end has had an outstanding offseason and is very impressive when you see him in person. If he ends up at OSU, the storylines will write themselves as his twin brother Talyn is committed to Oklahoma.
Tulsa Offers Area Standout
We mentioned with the McWilliams commitment that the state’s 2022 class has plenty of talent for the Golden Hurricane to target and here’s a great example of that. Holland Hall standout cornerback [player_tooltip player_id="61125" first="NuNu" last="Campbell"] tweeted out that he had picked up an offer from the Golden Hurricane after a workout at TU last week. This should be a no brainer for the TU as Campbell is one of the top cover corners in the state’s senior class and he’s in their backyard. They just signed Campbell’s former teammate [player_tooltip player_id="38533" first="Owen" last="Ostroski"] back in February and it makes all the sense in the world. Campbell is a borderline Top 10 prospect in the 2022 class and one of the top guys at his position.
