Continue ReadingPrep RedZone breaks down the quarterbacks currently ranked in the New Jersey Class of 2023 prospect rankings. PRZ NJ will be adding more quarterback prospects to the list throughout the summer. For now, I’ll break down each running back currently ranked on our list. PRZ NJ implemented a scoring system since the updated 2023 rankings were published. We are now looking at 16 different things when it comes to evaluating the quarterbacks on the list. While I won’t post what exactly those things are, I will publish the grade that each prospect ends up with after the evaluation. At the end of the day, varsity film reigns supreme over junior varsity, 7v7, and camp film. I also like to see certain throws made during a game and not just in individual drills.
With that being said, let’s look at the current Top 4 quarterbacks on our list.
No. 4 Michael Miller Michael Miller 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB Somerville | 2023 State NJ /6-2/185/Sommerville
PRZ New Jersey Score: .7968
Had I implemented the scoring system before updating the 2023 rankings, Miller would be the No. 3 quarterback right now. He threw for 1,600 yards, 17 touchdowns, and three interceptions. I am impressed with his touch on his mid-range and deep passes. He’s not afraid to take chances downfield and his accuracy on these types of plays allow him to make completions for big yardage. I didn’t see too much to go on as far as his footwork and set-up goes due to the fact he lines up in the shotgun. Miller could also work on getting the football out of his hands a little quicker. Hard to argue with his production on the field. He does a good job scanning the field and locating his second target.
No. 3 Robert Long Robert Long 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB St. Peter's Prep | 2023 State NJ /6-0/200/St. Peter’s Prep
PRZ New Jersey Score: .7687
Long is expected to become the starter for St. Peter’s Prep this upcoming season with Tahjamell Bullock graduating. I’ve had a chance to evaluate Long a couple of times in a camp setting. He does not have a lot of game film to work with and that’s why he may slip in the rankings after the next update. He’s a mobile quarterback who can escape pressure and make something happen with either his arm or his legs. He has a lot of potential, but we may have to wait until the fall too see how he looks in extended action on the football field.
No. 2 Austen Frattura Austen Frattura 6'1" | 195 lbs | QB Sparta | 2023 State NJ /6-1/195/Sparta
PRZ New Jersey Score: .8063
During the 2020 season, he completed 116-out-of-180 passes for 1,361 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions. He primarily lines up in the shotgun so it’s hard to get a read on how good his footwork is and quickness in his set-up. His touchdown-to-interception ration is excellent. He’s poised in the pocket and shows good timing with his passes, often leading his receivers. He’ll need to work a little bit more on his accuracy and releasing the ball a little quicker.
No. 1 Marco Lainez Marco Lainez 6'3" | 225 lbs | QB The Hun School | 2023 State NJ II/6-3/210/The Hun School
PRZ New Jersey Score: .8750
Lainez does not have the body of work from the 2020 season that Miller and Frattura have due to playing just two games. In those two games, Lainez completed 31-out-of-35 passes for 664 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. Granted, that’s not a whole lot of games. However, it’s his skillset that he was able to display in those games along with past live evaluations of him, that put him at No. 1. His drop back is excellent, and he sets up quickly. Other strong points are his accuracy, his poise in the pocket, his mobility, and his accuracy.
