That has to be Gwinnett County. Home to some of the state’s top programs including Grayson, Buford, Collins Hill, North Gwinnett, and many more, it’s a place where the big boys play. There’s D1 talent in every region in the county, and many of them have found to make big plays on both sides of the ball. It’s a deep group across the state, but once again, some of the best talent is coming out of Gwinnett County.
Here are a few two-way players to know about in Gwinnett County for the upcoming season…
Jack Luttrell – Hebron Christian
He may play in Single A private, but make no mistake, Luttrell is one of the top playmakers not only in Gwinnett County, but in all of metro-Atlanta. The 6-foot-1 185-pounder from Dacula is a versatile athlete who makes plays on both sides of the ball as a receiver and a defensive back. As a sophomore last year, Luttrell proved that he was one of the top receivers in the entire classification as he caught 45 passes for 778 yards and four touchdowns last season. He was the biggest playmaker in the passing game, but he made just as many plays on defense. Luttrell made 80 total tackles, forced two fumbles, and intercepted one pass. There’s a good chance he’ll play on offense at the next level due to his reliable hands, his size, deceptive speed, and ability to create separation from opposing defenders. Luttrell holds a handful of D1 offers right now and recently earned a new SEC offer from Tennessee.
Jake Pope Jake Pope 6'2" | 195 lbs | ATH Buford | 2022 State GA – Buford
The 6-foot-1 190-pounder from Buford is easily one of the top overall athletes in the state. As a junior last year, Pope made plays all over the field for the Buford Wolves, catching passes as a receiver, picking off passes as a defensive back, and also helping out on special teams. If a big play was needed, no matter what situation it was, Pope was there to make it. He’s got a great frame on him, but his overall athleticism and versatility is why he’s earned major offers from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, among others. Maybe the hottest recruit in all of Gwinnett County right now, Pope is a do-it-all football prospect who also helps the Wolves on the baseball diamond in the off-season. He’s a natural athlete, but more importantly, he’s a playmaker. Pope forced the game-winning fumble that lead to Buford’s incredible state-championship win last year over Lee County. He’ll be one of the more fun athletes to watch in the region this fall.
