In order to do that, you need to have receivers who can make plays. There are young, talented receivers all across the state who are looking to breakout as juniors this fall. The 2023 class is deep all around, but there are a few names in the class at wide receiver that folks need to know about for the near future.
Here are a few 2023 receivers who are on the verge of breakout seasons this fall…
Ethan Davis – Collins Hill
The Eagles fell a little short in last year’s 7A state title game, but they’ve added another explosive playmaker on offense to help four-star QB Sam Horn Sam Horn 6'4" | 190 lbs | QB Collins Hill | 2022 State GA in the passing game. They were already one of the best high-powered passing offenses in the state, and now they have another weapon in Davis. The Wisconsin native recently moved to Georgia and will be able to make a giant impact as a junior due to his size and athleticism. He might be a little raw right now, but the physical tools and athletic ability are easy to see. A star on the basketball court as well, Davis is a lean athlete at 6-foot-5 and already holds offers to play basketball at the next level. Now that he’ll line up at receiver, he’s getting offers to play football now too. The LSU Tigers extended an offer this week and they certainly won’t be the last. Expect Davis to have a MASSIVE junior season alongside Horn and five-star ATH Travis Hunter Travis Hunter 6'1" | 165 lbs | ATH Collins Hill | 2022 State GA .
Paul Davis Paul Davis 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Hart County | 2023 State GA – Hart County
We’ve written about Davis plenty of times in the past, and he proved last year as a sophomore that he’s one of the top over playmakers in East Georgia. He’s a smooth route runner, and while he’s not considered a “burner” with his speed, he’s still fast enough to get past defenders and make plays down the field. He showed good body control and is able to bring the ball down in traffic. He shows strong, reliable hands, and was always there to play when the Hart County offense needed. He’s great after the catch and has put on plenty of muscle over the last few months. He can break tackles down the field and is a major target in the red-zone. His stock is certainly on the rise and he has the potential and enough overall talent to play somewhere at the next level.
Ahmari Borden – Bainbridge
He may not have lit up the stat sheet last year, but there aren’t many in South Georgia who have better ball-skills than Borden. He has a great frame with long arms at 6-foot-3 175-pounds and has the ability to jump over smaller defenders in jump-ball situations. Borden is also a decent route-runner for his age and can run past defenders with his long stride. He’s a true down-field threat with reliable hands. If you aren’t a long, speedy cornerback, you’re going to have your hands full with Borden. The size and hands are impressive, but his ability to get in and out of breaks really stands out. He has quick feet and is tough to stay with for even smaller receivers close to the line of scrimmage. He shields his body away from defenders well and and snatches the ball with his hands instead of letting it get to his body. Overall, Borden should have a big year as a junior and could be one of South Georgia’s leading receivers this fall.
