It’s team camp season and we’re out in full swing all over Oklahoma, checking out some of the state’s best teams and their players. Be sure to check back every day as we’ll have more camp reports coming out. On Friday, we made it down to Noble to check out one of the more loaded team camps in the state. It featured a great blend of team and individual talent. We were impressed with several teams throughout the session. Some of these players, we already knew about and they’ve taken that next step. We also got a chance to see a few new faces as well. Here are some of the players from those squads that stood out to us today.
[player_tooltip player_id="38705" first="Albert" last="Baker"] - 2022 Running Back - Lawton
This should come as a surprise to nobody who has followed high school football in Oklahoma for the last decade, but Lawton potentially has another game-changer at running back. They’ve produced so much talent at that position alone over the last ten years and they might have their next standout. We first saw [player_tooltip player_id="38705" first="Albert" last="Baker"] last year but it was his play on defense that got our attention at that point. On Friday, Baker was taking the majority of the reps at running back and time after time, he would take a hand off, break it to the outside and simply outrun everyone down the field and into the end zone. Baker showcased speed, vision and that burst where if you don’t take the right angle on him, you’re not going to catch him. Baker and this Lawton team still have some room to improve but the 2022 running back will give them a chance to provide some sparks throughout the 2021 season and he could be a breakout star this fall.
[player_tooltip player_id="38671" first="Carson" last="May"] - 2022 Quarterback - Jones
Jones quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38671" first="Carson" last="May"] might be the highest rated prospect on this list. He’s currently in the running for being the top overall QB prospect in the state. And after watching him on Friday, we haven’t changed our minds. Even though May lost several wide receivers to graduation, it did not matter. Now, the new group of wideouts for Jones will need to continue to improve if the Longhorns are to contend for the 2A title this fall. However, May routinely put the ball where it needed to be and gave his guys a chance to make the catch. In my opinion, May is one of the most intriguing prospects to watch in this 2022 class. It feels like a dam is up and once the first big offer comes in, that dam will break and he’ll hear from colleges all over the country. He already has a few offers but he’s been a can’t miss QB since the start of last season. Colleges shouldn’t wait too long to make a move on him because by the time they do, it might be too late.
[player_tooltip player_id="99770" first="Clint" last="Campbell"] - 2023 Athlete - McLoud
One of the prospects that we were excited to see for the first time in person was McLoud’s [player_tooltip player_id="99770" first="Clint" last="Campbell"]. After watching his sophomore tape, we were very impressed with his abilities at the running back position. Then we watched him in person on Friday and became very conflicted on the McLoud star. At running back, Campbell was outstanding and everything that we saw on film. He broke big run after big run. However, he also lined up for McLoud on defense at the linebacker position and we can’t help but wonder what his future could be on defense. Don’t get us wrong, this is a very good problem to have for McLoud. They have a potential All State player at running back and linebacker and he’s one person. Campbell’s profile says running back but we have him listed here as an athlete because the debate is open. He could be either position at the next level. He’s also signed up for our Showcase event on June 6th and we already can’t wait to get another look at him in person.
[player_tooltip player_id="53168" first="Jack" last="Corbin"] - 2022 Offensive Lineman - Jones
We mentioned how Jones quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38671" first="Carson" last="May"] is one of the best quarterbacks in the state. Helping him stay on his feet and keeping his jersey clean will be the Longhorn offensive line, which has a chance to be one of the better OL units in 2A football this year. As a unit, they definitely do not lack size and have some powerful guys up front. Leading the group is 2022 lineman [player_tooltip player_id="53168" first="Jack" last="Corbin"]. At 6’4, Corbin has been moved around the OL for Jones and it doesn’t matter where he lines up, he’s going to take the man in front of him and put him on his back. Corbin isn’t as widely known as some of the other prospects in the 2022 OL class but he should benefit from his quarterback’s success. The more coaches that get a chance to see May, the more coaches will get a chance to see the big man blocking for him. Similar to a few other players on this list, 2021 could be a breakout year for Corbin and his recruitment.
[player_tooltip player_id="57161" first="Malek" last="Murphy"] - 2023 Running Back - Chickasha
The running back position in the state’s 2023 class is absolutely loaded with talent all over the state. One of the more underrated guys within that group is Chickasha’s [player_tooltip player_id="57161" first="Malek" last="Murphy"]. We knew about Murphy coming into his sophomore season last year but we think his 2021 season will be a breakout moment. It appears that Murphy has gained a few inches since the last time that we saw him in person and he certainly looks the part as a featured talent at the running back spot. On Friday, Murphy might have been the most talented running back on the field as he broke run after run and did it with a combination of skills. He could jump to the outside and outrun everyone or run in between the tackles and lower his shoulder. Since Murphy has gotten bigger, he’s not just a speed back that needs space to be successful. He can now beat a defense in a variety of ways and his stock should be going up as he heads into his junior season.
[player_tooltip player_id="53170" first="Raymond" last="Correa"] - 2024 Defensive Lineman - Jones
The third and final Jones prospect to make this list is the young bull of the group. 2024 defensive tackle [player_tooltip player_id="53170" first="Raymond" last="Correa"] is a 2024 prospect that you should certainly take note of going forward. In terms of the 2024 class, Del City’s [player_tooltip player_id="110735" first="David" last="Stone"] has the top spot locked up but Correa has the size and potential to be one of the better guys in this class, let alone at the defensive line position. Correa already has the size advantage against most offensive linemen that he’ll face. As a sophomore this fall, he’ll almost certainly require double teams on each and every play. The two things that could make Correa a complete game changer at the position is if he improves his quickness and those first few steps. And if he plays with aggression on every play. Combine those things with his size and power and he’ll be an absolute force for the Longhorns on the defensive side of the ball. Jones certainly has the rep as an offensive program but Correa might change that over the next few years.
[player_tooltip player_id="150088" first="Reed" last="Dequasie"] - 2023 Quarterback - Carl Albert
This was our first look at the future of Carl Albert football as 2023 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="150088" first="Reed" last="Dequasie"] is about to take over the dynasty that [player_tooltip player_id="38534" first="Ben" last="Harris"] graduated from. For four years, Harris was QB1 for the Titans and became the winningest QB in state history. How do you follow a legend? Well, we got our first look as Dequasie got a good amount of reps with the Titan offense. It should be noted that he’ll have some help as 2022 running back [player_tooltip player_id="38684" first="Buddy" last="Bizzell"] is one of the best in the state, but he was held out of the Noble camp. But that actually benefitted Dequasie as he was able to build some depth at the RB position, showcase his own talents as a runner and focus on passing the ball down field to some very impressive athletes. However, there’s no question that one of the biggest storylines will be about Dequasie taking over as QB1 of a Carl Albert program that has won five straight state championships and the expectations will be very high.
[player_tooltip player_id="38783" first="Tryce" last="Lewis"] - 2023 Offensive Lineman - McLoud
So we mentioned McLoud’s [player_tooltip player_id="99770" first="Clint" last="Campbell"] being one of the prospects we were excited to see in person. The same can be said about one of his big lineman in [player_tooltip player_id="38783" first="Tryce" last="Lewis"]. In fact, we were very surprised about the dominating size that McLoud has along their line of scrimmage in addition to Lewis. As of right now, we have Lewis as one of the better interior offensive linemen in the state’s 2023 class but after watching him in Noble, we’re also open to his play on the defensive side of the ball. However, we’re keeping him on the offensive side because it’s hard to ignore what he was able to do on that side of the ball as a sophomore last year. He was so dominant throughout the season and despite not being the biggest guy along the McLoud line, he’s arguably the most powerful. He looks like a prototypical interior offensive lineman at this point and McLoud will be able to showcase their power and rushing attack this fall.
[player_tooltip player_id="150089" first="Tyron" last="Amacker"] - 2023 Athlete - Lawton
After talking with some of the coaches at Lawton, it was very clear about their expectations for Lawton 2023 standout [player_tooltip player_id="150089" first="Tyron" last="Amacker"]. They believe that he could be the next explosive player to come out of this Lawton program. We got a limited chance to see him do his thing in this Wolverine offense. He was mainly lined up at wide receiver and when he got the ball in his hands and even had an inch of space, we saw immediately what had the Wolverine coaches so excited. He isn’t the biggest player but his quickness and pure speed was enough for him to navigate his way down the field. We mentioned his teammate [player_tooltip player_id="38705" first="Albert" last="Baker"] earlier in this article and the combination of Amacker and Baker will give Lawton some serious firepower on the offensive side of the ball this season. Amacker is a slot receiver name to be aware of moving forward in the state’s 2023 class.
[player_tooltip player_id="101264" first="Zane" last="Shadid"] - 2023 Linebacker - Bishop McGuinness
We knew plenty about Bishop McGuinness linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="101264" first="Zane" last="Shadid"] coming into the team camp on Friday. However, we didn’t know about the running back [player_tooltip player_id="101264" first="Zane" last="Shadid"]. We were pleasantly surprised to see Shadid lining up and taking reps at running back and giving the Irish a ball carrier that would play with energy and physicality. He certainly reminded us of many linebackers who also played running back and you could see that in his play. But Shadid adding that element of versatility to his game was something we enjoyed watching. His future is still on the defensive side of the ball but he’ll be able to help McGuinness on offense quite a bit. And speaking of the McGuinness defense, we were impressed by their unit as a whole. They were flying all over the field and not giving much up to opposing offenses. They aren’t loaded with D1 prospects by any means but they play outstanding team defense, which at this point of the year, was very fun to watch.
