Continue ReadingIn a normal year through camps, combines, and offseason workouts we can get an early read on the next crop of talented high school freshmen. We already have a handful of 2025 prospects that we’ll be keeping a close eye on this fall because of camps this spring. However, last offseason we had no camps and teams had to close their offseason training down so early on 2024 still remains a bit of an unknown as they enter their sophomore season. Nonetheless, we still have a few names to know thus far.
Talon Fisher, 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Fairfield
If we were ranking the 2024 class at this early stage Fisher would likely be the pick for Ohio’s top prospect. Despite Fairfield having a down season for their standards, their freshman quarterback was a bright spot for the Indians. He showed off some great dual-threat abilities rushing for 915 and passing for 401. In the air, Fisher did throw six interceptions to one touchdown but that can be contributed to a few factors. The supporting cast around Fisher was not very good and the competition he faced in Cincinnati’s Great Miami Conference is up there with the best in Ohio. Nonetheless, this young left quarterback has a of to like and should be in line for an even better sophomore season. Through the air and overall.
Jake Wheelock, 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds, Stebbins
Simply put, you don’t see 6-foot-4 and 290-pound freshmen that often but Wheelock is the exception. There are a handful of 2024 prospects around the state that have the size Wheelock has but he is the only one with significant varsity experience. In the trenches, he is a mauler at guard and his film is a lot of putting defenders in the dirt. As a freshman, he still has a good bit of work to do in the flexibility and techniques categories. He struggles with bending in and out of his stance at times but flexibility often improves with time, as does the technique. In the meantime, Wheelock is someone we are keeping a close eye on this coming fall. Some very high potential.
Steven Cammack, 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds, Twinsburg
Countless prospects every year get limited by the high school program they play in and that happened to Cammack as a freshman. He is a skilled and speedy wide receiver that was forced to play in a triple-option at Eastlake North High School. On the other side of the ball, Cammack put together a very good season at cornerback for the Rangers. Now at Twinsburg do not be surprised if Cammack takes Northeast Ohio by storm playing both ways. His speed, agility, and length are pretty unique for the type of player that Cammack is and do not be surprised if he ends up being Ohio’s top 2024 player by the time this class signs. We have sky-high expectations for this fall, to say the least.
Jakorian Coffey, 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, Avon
Avon is one of the most successful in Ohio on a yearly basis and they do it on the backs of great coaching, culture, and development. More often than not they also do with lesser top-tier talent than other Northeast Ohio powers but Coffey breaks that trend. He is a bruiser of a running back but he also has a ton of skill and speed to match that power. A dual-sport athlete that also runs track Coffey is someone the coaching staff at Avon can’t say enough good things about. He did not get much run as a freshman but this fall we would not be shocked if he is the face of the Eagles offense. Coffey could potentially lead Avon in both rushing and receiving yards if that says anything about his ceiling. Ohio has a fairly strong history with it comes to producing running backs and Coffey will be next in that line.
