What you may not know is the process of getting to the All-American Bowl. It essentially starts for a lot of prospects at Football University Regional Camps where players hope to earn an FBU Top Gun invite. After that, a good Top Gun performance can lead to an invitation to the National Combine in San Antonio or even the All-American Bowl itself.
Well, that was a roundabout way of saying that Prep Redzone was out at the Football University Regional Camp in Columbus, Ohio earlier this month. While the event did lack the already known prospects that hold handfuls of offers there was still a ton of talent at Hamilton Township.
Top performer: Taran Tyo out of Versailles High School, 2022, OL, 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds
Versailles is a smaller division V program in Northwest Ohio but they play in one of the best football conferences in Ohio. And on Sunday those reps against top-notch competition showed in Tyo’s performance Sunday. Lining up primarily at right tackle Tyo was a wall in pass protection, he has a near-perfect frame and was easily the most fluid lineman of the group. Tyo is a division one prospect and colleges will see that this summer, Sunday was just the introduction.
Next up offensively:
Owen Davis out of North Union High School, 2023, TE, 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds
Another division V kid that put on a show against upper-level competition was North Union’s, Owen Davis. The best compliment I can give Davis about his performance on Sunday is that he got his hands every ball thrown his way. With so much unfamiliarity between him and the quarterbacks, there are bound to be balls overthrown, behind the receiver, or just straight-up bad throws. Despite the bad throws Davis still got his hands on every ball, his catch radius is massive and he was the most consistent pass catcher at the camp. Once colleges can see Davis’s soft hands and huge catch radius they will fall in love.
Trilian Harris out of Bishop Sycamore Prep, 2022, QB, 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds
A reclassified 2021 prospect that is now in the 2022 class and at a prep school in Columbus, Harris experience showed on Sunday. He has gone through sessions upon sessions of quarterback training and he was practically a coach on the field. Every rep he was helping other quarterbacks improve for their next rep. And when he wasn’t coaching others up Harris was spinning it well while also throwing with accuracy and velocity. He is originally a California native so he lost his senior season due to COVID-19 so which hurt his recruitment. However, at Bishop Sycamore he should have a standout year this fall and colleges will come calling.
Amir Simmons out of Gahanna Lincoln High School, 2024, WR, 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds
Yes, Simmons has a diminutive frame but he plays much bigger and he is only a soon-to-be sophomore. Additionally, he has the speed and shiftiness to make up for everything he lacks in height. During the 1-on-1 and 7v7 portions of the camp, Simmons might have been the toughest cover on the field. Whether it was in the short, intermediate, or even deep portions of the field Simmons always got open. He also showed that he can do it from in the slot or out wide. Finally, despite his 5-foot-8 height, he showed he could climb the ladder to make a catch. Great speed, soft hands, crisp routes, and shiftiness in the open field. Simmons is what colleges look for in the slot.
