It’s a place that carries about high school football as well as any region in the country, and it’s where top athletes are produced each year. There are quite a few young receivers to know in that part of the state, and while they may be “under the radar” now, these players are bound for monsters seasons this fall.
Here are a few top 2023 wide receivers to know in South Georgia…
Ahmari Borden – Bainbridge
He may not have lit up the stat sheet last year, but there aren’t many in South Georgia who have better ball-skills than Borden. He has a great frame with long arms at 6-foot-3 175-pounds and has the ability to jump over smaller defenders in jump-ball situations. Borden is also a decent route-runner for his age and can run past defenders with his long stride. He’s a true down-field threat with reliable hands. If you aren’t a long, speedy cornerback, you’re going to have your hands full with Borden. The size and hands are impressive, but his ability to get in and out of breaks really stands out. He has quick feet and is tough to stay with for even smaller receivers close to the line of scrimmage. He shields his body away from defenders well and and snatches the ball with his hands instead of letting it get to his body. Overall, Borden should have a big year as a junior and could be one of South Georgia’s leading receivers this fall.
Adam Hopkins Adam Hopkins 6'1" | 170 lbs | WR Thomas County Central | 2023 State GA – Thomas County Central
One of the top young playmakers in all of South Georgia, the versatile athlete and rising junior from Thomasville makes a lot of plays both as a receiver and a defensive back for the Yellow Jackets. He’s not the biggest receiver at just 6-foot-0 170-pounder is a shifty player with quickness and ball skills. He needs to add more muscle this offseason but he does have some length to him and shows the ability to snatch the football out of the air. Even as a sophomore last fall, Hopkins proved he was consistently one of the top athletes on the field every play. He’s made a true impact early in his high school career and it has led to offers from Georgia, Florida State, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, among others. In 2020, Hopkins caught 29 passes in 9 games for 387 yards and 6 touchdowns. He’s a big-play waiting to happen and is expected to be one of the top-ranked 2023 wide receivers in the peach state.
Deonte Cole – Camden County
There could be a future star down in Southeast Georgia this year in Camden County receiver, Deonte Cole. He’s not the biggest guy, but he’s extremely explosive at 5-foot-8 155-pounds and has game-changing speed and playmaking ability. Again, he may be undersized, but he’s coming off an impressive sophomore season where he caught 42 passes for 633 yards and 7 TDs in just 10 games. Even as a smaller, younger receiver, Cole made a giant impact all season against some of the top defenses in the region. The staff at Camden County said Cole is their “Tyreek Hill/Rondale Moore” guy. He changes direction on a dime and makes it so hard for defenders to get a solid hand on him and bring him down. He’s excellent in the open space and can take it the distance on any particular play. He’s one of the biggest playmakers in all of South Georgia, and if he can continue adding weight and muscle this off-season, Cole could have a special junior season.
