The Southern Section features more schools than any other sections in the state. It features some of the top private schools in the nation (Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Servite) and public schools (Centennial/Corona, Mission Viejo, Sierra Canyon).
Below is a list of the top pass rushers in the Southern Section in the class of 2022. Keep in mind, film is limited on many players in the 2022 class because they have not yet played a junior season.
Some of these players are defensive linemen, some are outside linebackers and some are excellent inside backers. The list is based on quality of sophomore film, offseason reports and upside.
10. Luke Meyer, Capistrano Valley, Mission Viejo
Meyer is one of the few interior defensive linemen on this list. He is 6-foot-3, 285 pounds and consistently gets in the backfield. He does a solid job splitting double teams in the running game and overpowers a lot of guards. He can play one-technique or three-technique and has the speed to be a defensive end at the next level. Meyer had 68 tackles, four sacks and 23 hurries as a sophomore for the Cougars last season. Penn has been in contact with him and I expect him to land at a good FCS level school.
9. Kione Carey, Long Beach Poly, Long Beach
Carey got some playing time last season but this is an upside pick. It’s hard to judge his sophomore film because he was smaller and will be playing with a completely different body now. He is 30 pounds heavier and will still have the speed that makes him an excellent pass rusher. He has good inside moves and with his added strength may be able to hang with the big tackles in Division 1. Carey has been playing on the Long Beach Grind club team and his stock is on the rise.
Thanks @GiantSkillz for allowing me to compete and show my talents with other athletes the other day💪🏽‼️ pic.twitter.com/fGaPxD3Ksi

8. Maxx Silao, Servite, Anaheim
Silao has very impressive film from a sophomore season where he was thrown into the Trinity League fire. He had 31 tackles and three sacks and saw more playing time as the season progressed. He has natural strength, reads defenses well and can flat out hit. Silao is also a rugby player and is a great athlete at 6-foot-1 and around 260 pounds and earned First Team All-Trinity League honors as a sophomore.
Maxx Silao – DE – 6'1 225 – 1st Team All-League Trinity – And is still growing! He’s set to have a breakout year! @MaxxSilao #Tribe https://t.co/3luA0a82Dz

7. Aubrey Scott Aubrey Scott 6'6" | 250 lbs | DL Leuzinger | 2022 State CA , Leuzinger, Lawndale
Scott is one of the most physically dominant defensive linemen in Southern California. He is 6-foot-5, 265 pounds and had 9 sacks, 49 tackles, 15 for a loss and a pair of forced fumbles. He was the only sophomore to be named First Team All-Moore League last season. He transferred to Leuzinger from Compton and has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Kansas and Utah.
Extremely excited to announce that I have received an offer from the University of Arizona. Thank you Coach Cummings! #BearDown pic.twitter.com/fa2xQqv8ne

6. Marshon Oxley Marshon Oxley 6'3" | 220 lbs | DL Inglewood | 2022 State CA , Inglewood, Inglewood
Oxley is an outside linebacker from Inglewood High who had 57 tackles, eight sacks and a forced fumble as a sophomore last season. He plays on the strong side and has very good speed. He is almost exclusively an edge rusher, hardly ever makes an inside pass rushing move, which is fine because he is so athletic that even though the tackle knows what is coming, he still can’t stop Oxley. He has room to put on some size and is 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. Oxley has offers from Colorado, Kansas, Michigan State, San Jose State and UNLV.
