Attending the MRE (Major College Exposure) Combine at Ives Estates Park in North Miami-Dade County on Saturday, this was not the unpredictable receiver who played for six NFL teams and the Allen Wranglers in his amazing career, talked about football, but also spoke to the nearly 100 youngsters about life and how to never give up on your dreams.
“I was not recruited at all coming out of Benjamin Russell High in Alabama, he said. “It wasn’t until I began to play basketball, run track and football at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, where things began to fall into place. Not everyone starts out as a five star. There are success stories in different forms.”
As a six-time Pro Bowl selection and five-time first-team All-Pro, Owens holds or shares several NFL records. He ranks third in career receiving yards at 15,934 and third in receiving touchdowns at 153. He maintained – that from day 1 – it was all about being the best football player he could be. He never played the game to reach the Hall of Fame.
MRE IS ON THE RISE
With Founder & President Ernesto “Ernie” Munguia helping dreams come true with his Major College Exposure event, it has helped greatly with the recruiting exposure that in these times is really important – with Covid making it tougher to get that much needed exposure.
“What are objective has been from the start is to give these young men and their families another avenue in this recruiting process,” Muguia pointed “By having a combine like this with tremendous coaches and having the greats of the game like Terrell Owens and last year with Brian Orakpo gives these young men a huge boost.”
Indeed, on Saturday, Owens didn’t just come and talk with the players. He made it an entire day, showing those who attended a few pointers – while walking around the field and signing autographs and being a memorable part of everyone’s life who attended.
“This is a tremendous way to spend a Saturday,” said recent Miami Edison transfer receiver British Mitchell, who won the MVP and took home an autographed Terrell Owens football. “Plenty of athletes out here looking to get better.”
It was a great day – with the weather in the 70’s and football being the focal point for plenty of south Florida prospects who learned a little bit about the game and shared some time with a Hall of Famer.
