Teams from across the state are fighting to clinch that last spot, while others are playing for their region championship and trying to lock up a top seed. In a week loaded with big time talent matching up against each other, take a look at the top games to watch in week 7:
6A: Chaparral (2-1) @ Centennial (4-2)
It will be interesting to see how Chaparral’s explosive offense will do against a tough Centennial team. Centennial’s 2 losses are against Chandler and Hamilton, which look like the two best teams in the state right now. They held Chandler to 31 points which is the lowest Chandler has scored this season. Chaparral had lost to Liberty, but quickly bounced back last week to beat a legit Casteel team 53-36. Brayten Silbor Brayten Silbor 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Chaparral | 2022 State AZ , Jared Williams Jared Williams 5'11" | 205 lbs | RB Chaparral | 2021 State AZ , and Maxwell Minor Maxwell Minor 6'4" | 185 lbs | WR Chaparral | 2021 State AZ are a tough trio to gameplan against, but Centennial’s DJ Gleash DJ Gleash 6'4" | 215 lbs | DL Centennial | 2021 State AZ will look to have another solid game and put pressure on Silbor to get a big W in a big game.
5A: Cactus Shadows (4-0) @ Desert Mountain (3-1)
Both teams had 2 games cancelled due to COVID complications, so each game is even more important with an already short season. Desert Mountain’s only loss comes against an undefeated Sunnyslope team, and Cactus Shadows has been playing lights out since they started. Cactus Shadows QB Jaden White has been slinging the ball around and has been difficult to stop, yet the Desert Mountain secondary have been ball hawks all season. Desert Mountain QB Aiden Cerullo has also played lights out, meaning this game has a lot of potential to be a shootout.
4A: Flagstaff (4-2) @ Coconino (6-0)
There’s nothing better than a cross town rivalry game for a region championship. The two Flagstaff area schools are very similar, and both have 2 of the top RB’s in the state in Zachary Bennett Zachary Bennett 5'8" | 180 lbs | RB Coconino | 2021 State AZ and Luis Jaramillo Luis Jaramillo 6'0" | 210 lbs | RB Flagstaff | 2021 State AZ . Both of these guys will handle the workload for their squads, and it will be exciting to see these two playmakers go toe-to-toe. Flagstaff was shockingly upset by Prescott, and then followed another loss to a solid Cactus team the week after, but looked promising last week in a bounce back win over Lee Williams. Coconino continues to prove to be a legit 4A contender, so we’ll see who will go home with bragging rights and take the 4A Grand Canyon Region Championship on Friday.
3A: Round Valley (5-1) @ Blue Ridge (4-1)
This game should be a dog fight. Two hard hitting, gritty small town teams will go at it in the toughest region in 3A. Blue Ridge QB PJ London PJ London 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Blue Ridge | 2021 State AZ has been phenomenal all year, showing legit FCS level talent, and will look to have a huge performance in a big time game. A Round Valley win should clinch them the 3A East Region Title since they beat Snowflake, but a Blue Ridge win could put everyone in a cluster since they lost a tight game to Snowflake 22-21, depending on how Snowflake does this week. A lot can happen in this region, and both teams need this win more than ever.
2A: Scottsdale Prep (5-0) @ Scottsdale Christian (5-0)
Another region championship on the line as the two Scottsdale schools look to go toe-to-toe. Scottsdale Christian’s Ben Tobin has been a fun player to watch all year, as he can burn you from anywhere on the field. Scottsdale Christian has blown everybody out so far, with their closest game being a 37-6 win over Camp Verde and has looked like the most complete team all around. Scottsdale Prep QB Oscar Frias and Thomas Reinhardt look to counter Tobin, but it will be a very tough challenge to compete with Tobin and the rest of Scottsdale Christian.
1A: Anthem Prep (5-1) @ Superior (5-0)
It’s playoff time in 1A ball, and Anthem Prep will travel to Superior in an attempt to hand them their first and last “L” of the season. Superior has absolutely smacked everybody all season, and Anthem Prep’s only loss comes against a powerhouse Bagdad team. Anthem Prep QB Jake Crawford has thrown for over 1,500 yards this season, while Superior standout Adam Navarrette has been putting up big numbers from everywhere he lines up. 1A is a toss up, and it should be interesting to see who can advance to the next round.
