Continue ReadingThe final week of the regular season is upon us. The first five weeks have brought a lot of unknowns, excitement and amazing performances. There was some movement in the state rankings this week. Let’s take a look at the players to watch for the teams ranked No. 6-10.
Jahdir Loftland, Donovan Catholic: Loftland compiled 224 rushing yards on 34 carries with a 1-yard score as No. 10 Donovan Catholic stayed perfect at 5-0 following a 21-14 win over Southern. Loftland was able to showcase his shiftiness, blocking ability and the ability to make defenders miss in the victory.
Ali Lee Jr. Ali Lee Jr. 5'11" | ATH Woodbridge | 2021 State NJ , Woodbridge: While 4-0 and No. 9 Woodbridge made plays in the passing game in an impressive 41-0 rout of Parsippany Hills, it was Lee who was simply unstoppable. The Woodbridge star ran for 264 yards on 25 carries with four TDs. That performance put him at 859 yards and nine rushing scores on the season. Lee is capable of making plays on defense and special teams, too. Lee fights for extra yardage and is a weapon in the receiving game.
Patrick Smith Patrick Smith 5'11" | RB Holy Spirit | 2021 State NJ , Holy Spirit: Smith and No. 8 Holy Spirit have a major test this week against St. Augustine after a week off. He has been on a tear this season, running 1,038 yards and 11 TDs. He has rushed for over 100 yards in Holy Spirit’s 4-0 start, including 300-plus yards in victories over Cedar Creek and Vineland.
Darnell Hightower, Cherokee: Hightower picked off a pair of passes in 5-0 and No. 7 Cherokee’s victory over Seneca on Oct. 30. He has made a splash on the defensive end with some hard hits and pass breakups.
P.J. Casale, Delbarton: Casale had a sack and made 10 tackles for No. 6 Delbarton’s 49-8 blowout victory over Hudson Catholic. Casale is a linebacker who swarms to the ball and makes plays all over the field.
