While a number of high schools have dealt with a surge in COVID-19 cases that have impacted games, others went right back to work. Let’s take a look at some of the winners from Friday night’s action.
Santana Fonseca, Sayreville: Fonseca connected on a 42-yard field goal for the go-ahead score in the third quarter as Sayreville picked up a 10-7 victory over New Brunswick Friday night.
Brandon Boria, Cherokee: Boria was a force Friday night in No. 8 Cherokee’s 42-7 victory over Seneca, rushing for 144 yards and four scores on 10 carries. Boria scored on runs of 5, 30 and a pair of 43-yard runs, as Cherokee improved to 5-0.
TJ McArthur, Brick Memorial: McArthur threw for a touchdown and found the end zone on a pair of runs as Brick Memorial picked up its first win of the season behind a 21-7 result over Toms River South.
Luke Ohea, Raritan: Ohea scored three rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter, and Raritan held off Red Bank Regional, 28-21, to improve to 4-1. Ohea scored on TD runs of 3, 8 and 34 yards.
Wall Defense: Wall, the fourth-ranked team in the state, shut out Manasquan, 21-0, Friday night. It was the third shutout win for Wall in four games, and the third in a row.
Hunter Lawrence, Old Bridge: Lawrence ran for three TDs as Old Bridge handed South Brunswick its first loss of the season, 22-18, Friday night. Old Bridge improved to 4-1.
Mark Tiganila/Jason Kollman, Hightstown: Tiganila and Kollman combined for 352 yards and five touchdowns as Hightstown rolled to a 41-21 victory over Lawrence to improve to 3-2. Kollman and Tiganila were big-play threats all night, scoring on some long runs.
Sabino Portella, Red Bank Catholic: Portella ran for 103 yards on 17 caries as No. 18 Red Bank Catholic earned a 14-0 shutout victory over Long Branch.
Anthony Henriquez Anthony Henriquez 5'10" | LB Hoboken | 2021 State NJ , Hoboken: Henriquez continued his stellar play with 201 rushing yards on 22 carries with three TDs as Hoboken edged Weequahic, 31-28, Friday night. He was just as good defensively, recording 20.5 tackles and a forced fumble. Kyrin Rhone finished with 122 rushing yards on 15 carries and scored twice for Hoboken, now 4-1 on the season.
Trey Kaplan, Lenape Valley: Kaplan ran for a pair of scores, and Lenape Valley edged High Point, 14-7, Friday night. Lenape Valley bounced back from a loss to Newton last week.
Ali Lee Jr. Ali Lee Jr. 5'11" | ATH Woodbridge | 2021 State NJ , Woodbridge: In a battle of unbeaten teams, Woodbridge made a statement with a 41-0 shutout of Parsippany Hills. Lee was sensational with 264 rushing yards on 25 carries, scoring on runs of 2, 21, 30 and 49 yards.
St. Augustine Defense: St. Augustine, the No. 14 team in the state, defeated No. 6 Williamstown, 17-16, in a thriller. The defense came up clutch in overtime, as a defensive hold on a two-point conversion gave the Hermits the victory. St. Augustine had an interception, six sacks and two fumble recoveries. Brady Small and Lenny Dolson each had two sacks, and Kenneth Everett Jr. had the interception.
Luke Doerr-Fredrickson, West Morris: Doerr-Fredrickson scored twice as West Morris Central stayed perfect at 5-0 after grinding out a 21-17 win over Mount Olive.
Matt Yascko, Edison: The Edison quarterback orchestrated a 14-play, 92-yard drive that resulted in a Qwentin Rose Qwentin Rose 5'7" | RB Dunellen | 2021 State NJ score as Edison defeated Summit, 20-17. Yascko threw a 21-yard TD pass and threw for 191 yards. He added 40 yards on the ground. Rose finished with 69 yards rushing and two scores, and Daniel Maurath made 12 tackles and recovered three fumbles on the defensive end for Edison.
