On Friday Night, Edmond Santa Fe took on Yukon in a top 10 6A-I battle. Both teams struggled early on defense but Santa Fe regrouped at halftime and shutdown Yukon’s rushing attack while having an explosion of their own on the ground with RBs [player_tooltip player_id="61222" first="Micah" last="Snoddy"] and [player_tooltip player_id="38657" first="Ethane" last="Hyche"]. Let’s take a look at those two and a few other players who had big nights.
[player_tooltip player_id="61222" first="Micah" last="Snoddy"] - Running Back - Class of 2021
[player_tooltip player_id="61222" first="Micah" last="Snoddy"] is usually the complimentary back to Ethan Hyche, but in this game, Snoddy outshined Hyche for a large part of the night. Micah got most of his carries in between the tackles and was an absolute bruiser going for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns on 14 carries. Outside of stats, Snoddy also showed some of the best contact balance that I have seen in person all season as he refused to go down on first contact. If you came at him with less than 3 people or went up high on him you were not taking him to the ground. Hyche had more carries and yards on the night and has more on the season, but Santa Fe may be going into the second half of the season with one of the best RB duos in the state.
[player_tooltip player_id="38657" first="Ethane" last="Hyche"] - Running Back - Class of 2021
The leading part of this RB duo is [player_tooltip player_id="38657" first="Ethane" last="Hyche"] and Hyche lived up to that title Friday night. Snoddy jumped out to a big start in this game and received a large portion of the carries to begin, but Hyche was consistent throughout the night and dominated when he got his chances. What really impressed me about Hyche was his stamina, he looked fresher and even more dominant in the 4th quarter than he did to begin the game. Hyche made defenders look silly near the end of this game and scored the touchdown that served as the dagger late in the 4th quarter on a 76-yard run. On the night, Hyche finished with 230 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Santa Fe is stacked at the skill positions with guys like [player_tooltip player_id="61144" first="Scott" last="Pfieffer"] and [player_tooltip player_id="38667" first="Talyn" last="Shettron"], but Hyche and Snoddy showed on Friday night that they can take over a game just as easily on the ground as their teammates can in the air.
[player_tooltip player_id="38489" first="Collin" last="Oliver"] - Linebacker - Class of 2021
Santa Fe’s defense looked a little overwhelmed and confused in the first quarter of this game but ended up dominating and flipping the script towards the end thanks in large part to their LB core led by [player_tooltip player_id="38489" first="Collin" last="Oliver"]. Oliver played primarily on the edge in this game and was constantly disrupting Yukon’s option plays in the backfield before they could even get started and ended the night with 3 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. The Oklahoma State Commit showed some flashes of what his ceiling is in this game which is something the Cowboys should be very excited about.
[player_tooltip player_id="61242" first="Chris" last="Fitzpatrick"] - Linebacker - Class of 2023
Santa Fe has quite the duo of LBs with [player_tooltip player_id="38489" first="Collin" last="Oliver"] and [player_tooltip player_id="38512" first="James" last="Burnett"], but the player that I was pleasantly surprised with on this defense was [player_tooltip player_id="61242" first="Chris" last="Fitzpatrick"]. Fitzpatrick flew all over the field on Friday night, stuffing rushers in the hole, forcing them inside on the edge, and chasing them down in the open field. On the night, Fitzpatrick had 15 total tackles including a few for loss. After this season the Wolves will lose a handful of defenders including Oliver and Burnett, but they should be in good hands with Fitzpatrick manning the defense in the neat future.
[player_tooltip player_id="38505" first="Angelo" last="Rankin Jr."] - Wide Receiver/ Defensive Back - Class of 2021
As I said pre-season in our 6A-I preview, Angelo Rankin is one of my favorite players in the state because of how electric he is as an athlete in the open field both on offense and defense. And after watching this game I still hold true to that statement. Rankin did not have the most eye-popping stats on offense due to the success of Santa Fe’s rushing attack, but he did manage to take his one catch to the house on a screen that he took 29 yards. Then on defense, he once again shined on a night that not many DBs would due to the rush heavy attack that Yukon has. In total, Rankin had 5 tackles, including a tackle for loss, but what impressed me most about him defensively was his closing speed and instincts in the open field to either make the tackle himself or to redirect the ball carrier for his teammates to clean up. Rankin has recently de-committed from the Naval Academy and has reopened his recruitment. Whoever lands him will be getting one of the most athletically gifted players in the state.
