Week 2 will surely bring more drama and exciting plays. Let’s take a look at some players to watch this week for the teams ranked 16-20 in the state.
Jahdir Loftland, Donovan Catholic, Sr. RB – Donovan Catholic enters as the No. 20 team in the state this week following a 42-6 thrashing of Brick Memorial on Oct. 2. Loftland was excellent for a high-octane Donovan Catholic offense, finishing with 171 yards on the ground on 12 carries with two touchdowns. Donovan Catholic takes on Toms River East on the road Friday night.
Trevor Cohen, Holy Spirit, Jr. QB – Cohen threw for three touchdowns in No. 19 Holy Spirit’s 18-6 victory over St. Jospeh (Hamm.). In the victory, Holy Spirit’s Patrick Smith Patrick Smith 5'11" | RB Holy Spirit | 2021 State NJ rushed for 102 yards on 25 carries. Holy Spirit will play at Cedar Creek this Saturday.
Matt Garatty, Phillipsburg, Sr. QB – Garatty was efficient at quarterback for the Stateliners, going 12-for-14 for 155 yards and three touchdowns in No. 18 Phillipsburg’s 39-14 rout of Hunterdon Central this past Friday. He also ran for a score. He threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Josh Colon. Phillipsburg will meet Montgomery this week.
Cole Freeman, Delbarton, Sr. QB – Delbarton, now No. 17 in the state rankings, picked up a big-time win over Seton Hall Prep, scoring 24 unanswered points from the second quarter on. Freeman threw two touchdowns and ran for another in the victory. That included a 45-yard TD pass to Nick Petrillo Nick Petrillo 6'3" | TE Delbarton | 2022 NJ . Delbarton will have a stiff test against DePaul this Saturday.
Najih Raheem, Red Bank Catholic, So. WR – Rahman made six receptions for 108 yards and hauled in a 20-yard TD pass as No. 16 Red Bank Catholic edged Mater Dei Prep, 10-3, this past week. RBC takes on Middletown South on the road this Friday.
