Week 2 will surely bring more drama and exciting plays. Let’s take a look at some players to watch this week for the teams ranked 11-15 in the state.
Ali Lee, Jr., Woodbridge, Sr. RB – Woodbridge, the No. 15 team in the state, was forced to cancel its season opener with Linden due to COVID-19. The team is coming off a 10-win season and Lee was a big reason why. He ran for 1,873 yards on 296 carries with 21 touchdowns, and he had two receiving touchdowns. Lee had a heavy workload last season and should be ready to go against Colonia Friday night.
Nick Branca, Northern Highlands, Jr. RB. – Branca had a night to remember in No. 14 Northern Highlands’ 28-19 victory over Hackensack on Friday, Oct. 2. He ran 25 times for 157 yards and also had an 80-yard kickoff return for a score. Northern Highlands meets Ridgewood Friday night.
Patrick Jamin, Rumson-Fair Haven, Sr. WR – Jamin had a strong receiving performance in No. 13 Rumson-Fair Haven’s 41-9 rout of Middletown North this past Friday. Jamin had five receptions for 120 yards and two scores, catching TD passes of 40 and 25 yards from quarterback Josh Harmon, who went 12-of-16 for 185 yards and the two TDs. John Volker ran for 121 yards and two TDs for Rumson. The team will meet Long Branch Friday night.
Devon Kargman, Woodrow Wilson, Jr. QB – Kargman helped Woodrow Wilson, the 12th-ranked team in the state, hold off Shawnee, 34-27, this past Saturday. Kargman ran for an 11-yard score and connected on touchdown passes to Nyir Jones and Michael Estremera. Woodrow Wilson takes on Cherokee on the road Friday night.
Ronnie Heath, Don Bosco Prep, So. RB – Heath exploded for 182 yards on 30 carries with three touchdowns as No. 11 Don Bosco Prep rallied to defeat Paramus Catholic, 34-13, on Friday, Oct. 2. Don Bosco outscored Paramus Catholic 27-0 in the second half, capitalizing on 21 third-quarter points. Heath found the end zone on runs of 5, 7 and 8 yards. Don Bosco quarterback Jake Robbins ran for 97 yards and a score in the win. The team will take on No. 1 St. Peter’s Prep in a highly anticipated state-ranked matchup this Saturday afternoon.
