To finish out our defensive breakdowns for 2022 we have the defensive backs. This group features one of the most touted prospects in the state, along with a lot of other talented corners and safeties. Let’s see who made the cut.
[player_tooltip player_id="38668" first="Gentry" last="Williams"] - Booker T Washington
Though he is unfortunately lost for the season due to an ACL tear, [player_tooltip player_id="38668" first="Gentry" last="Williams"] is still one of the best prospects in the state regardless of class. Gentry is an elite athlete who has played quarterback and wide receiver for Booker T, but his best position at the next level is without a doubt at cornerback. On defense, Gentry is an absolute burner with serious track speed and is a shutdown corner who you will rarely see lose in man coverage one on one due to speed alone. They are already contenders right now, but look out for Booker T to be straight-up dangerous next season when Gentry is back on the field at full strength.
[player_tooltip player_id="61125" first="NuNu" last="Campbell"] - Holland Hall
[player_tooltip player_id="61125" first="NuNu" last="Campbell"] is an elite athlete who does a little bit of everything for Holland Hall but projects best as a cornerback. On offense, NuNu is a dynamic and elusive running back, and he additionally returns punt and had a couple go for touchdowns a season ago. As a corner, NuNu has great hips and is excellent at turning and running with WRs to mirror their routes and stay with them. There is the famous saying that cornerbacks play on defense for a reason but that is certainly not the case for NuNu because he has a tremendous ability to track the ball and come down with it like he is a receiver. Overall, NuNu seems to be close to the complete package at corner, so it will be exciting to see the finished product in 2022.
[player_tooltip player_id="61134" first="Corey" last="Gordon"] - Putnam City West
Next on our list, we have our first safety of the bunch in [player_tooltip player_id="61134" first="Corey" last="Gordon"]. Gordon is another impressive athlete who also shines on the hardwood in the winter, but on the football field he is a bit of a hybrid at safety. Gordon is an excellent open-field tackler and has saved a handful of potential touchdowns over the last two seasons, he loves to come downhill and strike ball carriers. However, Gordon is not just a box safety, he has his fair share of interceptions and tracks the ball like a centerfielder when it comes his way. It is not often you find a free safety with Gordon’s size, ball skills, and willingness and effectiveness to bring down ball carriers in the open field. If I was a college coach I would be rushing to snag this guy before he becomes more well known.
[player_tooltip player_id="57047" first="Jaden" last="King"] - Booker T Washington
Coming in at 4 we have our second Cornerback from Booker T in [player_tooltip player_id="57047" first="Jaden" last="King"]. Similar to teammate [player_tooltip player_id="38668" first="Gentry" last="Williams"], King is an absolute speed demon who you will rarely see lose one on one due to speed alone. King is listed as 5’11" but looks a little smaller on the field, however, what he lacks in height he certainly makes up for with speed, explosiveness, and ball skills. King is constantly out jumping receivers who are taller than him to make plays on the ball as if he was going up for a rebound. So far this season, King has been an absolute interception machine and leads the state with 7 interceptions in 6 games including 4 in one game against Bartlesville. Good luck throwing on this Booker T secondary once [player_tooltip player_id="38668" first="Gentry" last="Williams"] is back and healthy next season.
[player_tooltip player_id="38716" first="Eli" last="Williams"] - Stillwater
To round out our list we have [player_tooltip player_id="38716" first="Eli" last="Williams"] from Stillwater. Eli has played snaps all over the secondary for Stillwater this season but looks most comfortable when he is allowed to play in space and simply read the quarterback’s eyes. Eli has great instincts in the secondary, he knows when to crash down on the play and he times his hits well. However, similar to [player_tooltip player_id="61134" first="Corey" last="Gordon"], Eli has great ball skills to go with his tackling ability. He already has 4 interceptions on the season and has shown great vertical leap ability when he goes up for contested balls. Stillwater has studs all over the field at all positions, and I would without a doubt include Eli on that list of studs.
