Winners From Early Scrimmages

Scrimmages have gotten underway in the Garden State as the football season nears. A number of teams had their first and possibly lone opportunity for game preparation for the 2020 campaign. Let’s take a look at some winners from early scrimmages throughout the state. <strong>Evyn Menta, Donovan Catholic, Sr. QB</strong> – Menta played at quarterback for Donovan Catholic for the first time, and he was sharp in a 21-7 scrimmage victory over Wall, a team ranked in the top 10 in the state to start the year. He threw touchdown passes to Danny Flemming and James Bivins in the scrimmage. He was accurate, poised and made good decisions in the pocket. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27878" first="Desmond" last="Igbinosun"], Union, Sr. DB</strong> – Igbinosun could be in for a major senior season before heading off to play at Rutgers. He played well in Union’s scrimmage against Woodbridge in a battle of top-20 teams in the state. Igbinosun will be making tons of plays at defensive back, but he made plays on offense in this game, scoring on a 69-yard touchdown run on a direct snap that put Union ahead by 10 points, 13-3. He finished with four carries for 113 yards. Shawn Smith also played well at quarterback, as he’ll fill in for graduated sensation Andrew Sanborn, who now plays collegiate football at American International. Junior [player_tooltip player_id="27980" first="Davison" last="Igbinosun"], Desmond’s younger brother, also had a nice showing with a 21-yard receiving touchdown. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27919" first="Jaiden" last="Abrams"], Hammonton, Sr. RB</strong> – Abrams had a monster junior season for Hammonton with 1,843 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on 270 carries. He ran for over 100 yards in pretty much every game. In a scrimmage against Mainland, Abrams ran for a score as Hammonton looks to build on a solid 2019 season. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27871" first="Al-Shadee" last="Salaam"], East Orange, Sr. RB</strong> – Salaam, a Rutgers commit, performed well in East Orange’s 13-0 shutout of nearby rival Irvington. Salaam caught a 15-yard touchdown pass. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound all-purpose back finished with eight catches, including the TD in the third quarter. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27891" first="Nasir" last="Robinson"], Penns Grove, Sr. RB</strong> – Robinson looked efficient at running back and linebacker for Penns Grove in a scrimmage against West Deptford. He is coming off a junior year where he rushed for 1,618 yards and 29 touchdowns. <strong>Weber Karsay, Montgomery, Sr. RB</strong> – Somerset County’s Montgomery earned a 28-0 shutout of Hopewell Valley in its scrimmage. Karsay ran for three scores, including a 60-yarder. He will have a heavier workload this year for the Cougars after the loss of some key players from a season ago. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27976" first="Nasir" last="Hill"], St. Augustine, Jr. WR</strong> – Hill made a 30-yard touchdown catch and had a pair of interceptions on defense as St. Augustine defeated Woodrow Wilson 21-6 in a competitive scrimmage featuring top-20 programs. Hill made an impact in the first series for St. Augustine and then his interceptions were crucial later on in the game.
