The 2020 season has begun across the state of Oklahoma and really gets in full swing this week. And while the season gets going, recruiting is in full swing. As of right now, Oklahoma’s 2021 class has 28 prospects currently committed. Last week, Edmond Santa Fe standout [player_tooltip player_id="38505" first="Angelo" last="Rankin Jr."] committed to Navy and Del City linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="38498" first="Rejhan" last="Tatum"] committed to Boise State. The 2021 class appears to be deep, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Every Wednesday, we’ll spotlight five prospects that are still deciding their college futures. [player_tooltip player_id="38523" first="Caden" last="Hendren"] - Athlete - Piedmont We have a couple players listed as athletes on this list because they don’t have just one position that they play well. They have a few possibilities when it comes to their position at the next level. The first example of that is Piedmont’s [player_tooltip player_id="38523" first="Caden" last="Hendren"]. Piedmont ran and ran and ran the ball in 2019, but one of the brightest stars was Hendren as a wide receiver. When Piedmont would bring a defense in with their flexbone attack, they would then drop back and hit Hendren as a home run threat at the receiver position. Hendren has also shown great potential on the defensive side of the ball. And on defense specifically, there’s a lot of versatility there. He could be used in a variety of ways on defense. Whether it’s in the secondary or moving him closer to a linebacker, Hendren can produce from a lot of different places on the field. Hendren has a handful of offers at this point but another big year could really help that number expand. [player_tooltip player_id="38511" first="Darryan" last="Moss"] - Linebacker - Broken Arrow We wrote about Broken Arrow linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="38511" first="Darryan" last="Moss"] earlier this week with our Broken Arrow Scouting Report. He had a strong showing in Broken Arrow’s season-opening victory over Bentonville West. Moss came into this season as one of the top linebackers in Oklahoma’s 2021 class. He had a strong junior season that put him on the radar of college coaches. This offseason, despite the pandemic, was huge for Moss. He had a good spring and summer of getting bigger and stronger. he also picked up a handful of D1 offers during that time. Moss is a big linebacker that has the ability to move around well for his size. In the Scouting Report, we mentioned how Moss is taking more of a leadership role with the Tiger defense and it showed on the field and the sideline. When it comes to recruiting, it’s easy to make comparisons to stock. Mostly with recruits’ stock going up. That’s certainly the case with Moss. A big senior season could make Moss one of the more sought-after available recruits in Oklahoma’s 2021 class. [player_tooltip player_id="38688" first="Dorian" last="Plumley"] - Quarterback - El Reno El Reno quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38688" first="Dorian" last="Plumley"] has been one of the more dynamic players from the quarterback position in the last two seasons. He had a breakout performance as a sophomore, when he threw four touchdowns while also running for four touchdowns. At that point, we knew that Plumley had the chance to be a big name at the quarterback position. However, Plumley is still somewhat underrated when it comes to recruiting circles. We see a lot of similarities in his game to former Moore quarterback Deuce Hishaw, who signed with Kansas in the 2020 class. Plumley has a lot of the similar physical attributes and plays the game similarly as well. When it comes to a pure passer, Plumley still has room to improve. But that’s not why you recruit him. You recruit him because he’s a dynamic playmaker that’s improving every day as a passer. He can still torch defenses with his legs, but the scary aspect is how much better he will be as a passer. In their season-opening win last week, Plumley threw four touchdowns on just 10-14 passing. [player_tooltip player_id="38531" first="Mason" last="Williams"] - Quarterback - Bixby Let’s just go ahead and address this. Bixby quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38531" first="Mason" last="Williams"] is one of the best quarterbacks, if not the best in Oklahoma. That’s a fact. Williams will have a shot to eclipse 10,000 yards and 100 touchdowns in his career. That’s a fact. Williams and the Spartans have won 26 straight games and back to back titles. That’s a fact. Williams is under 6-foot. That’s a fact. And that last fact is all that matters to some college coaches. There are plenty of cases where undersized and under-recruited quarterbacks go on to prove everyone wrong. Williams could very well be the next one. And look, we’re an Oklahoma website so we’re biased and not afraid to admit it. We hope he rewrites the record book at whatever college he signs with, like he’s done at Bixby. But the unfortunate truth about recruiting is if you’re under 6-foot and play quarterback, you’re behind the eight ball. However, with another strong season, there shouldn’t be any doubt whether or not Williams can do it at the next level. It just shouldn’t happen. [player_tooltip player_id="38526" first="Sherod" last="Davis"] - Athlete - Del City If you’re looking for name to circle going into this season as a breakout star candidate, here’s a great one. Del City’s [player_tooltip player_id="38526" first="Sherod" last="Davis"] is the ultimate definition of an athlete. We cannot wait to see how Del City utilizes the outstanding athlete this fall. Last season, Davis did most of his damage as a wide receiver. He was very good at that position, but we feel like his highest ceiling might be on defense. When we watched Davis this offseason, it was as a key member of Del City’s championship-contender basketball team. Davis’ raw athleticism on the basketball floor was very reminiscent of former Midwest City standout Jalen Redmond, now a defensive end with Oklahoma. This isn’t to suggest that Davis is there with Redmond as a defensive prospect, but we wouldn’t hate to see what he could do on the defensive side of the ball. One thing is certain, he has that unique combination of size, speed and power that could make him an elite defender. Like we said, the sky is the limit for Davis this fall with a Del City team, loaded with talent.
