Here at Prep Redzone Oklahoma, we’re dedicated to bringing you the most in-depth and widespread coverage of Oklahoma high school football. Every week, we’ll have practice reports, featuring some of the best teams in the state as they prepare for a big game on Friday night. We’ll give a breakdown on how the team is doing, how some of the top stars are shining and who are some of their breakout performers. This report features 6A-D2 powerhouse Stillwater as they hit the road and take on Mustang.
Last Week - Beat Edmond Santa Fe 45-32
Stillwater opened up their season last week with a win at home against Edmond Santa Fe. The Pioneers handed the Wolves their second straight loss and they looked like one of the top teams in their class once again as we head into the 2020 season. The Pioneers put Santa Fe in a 29-12 hole at halftime and would put it on cruise control from there. The offense was rolling all night and the defense came up big with several turnovers throughout the night. It was definitely an impressive win for a Stillwater team that has state title aspirations to take out one of the top teams in 6A-D1. Let’s take a look at some of their individual stars.
INDIVIDUAL SPOTLIGHT
[player_tooltip player_id="38540" first="Caleb" last="Allen"] - 2021 Quarterback
With a roster full of talent returning, the one question with Stillwater coming into the 2020 season was the quarterback position. Who was going to follow Gunnar Gundy, who put up monster numbers the last few seasons. However, we got that answer pretty quickly as senior [player_tooltip player_id="38540" first="Caleb" last="Allen"] emerged to take over that spot. Before he even had a varsity start under his belt, he was being recruited by some colleges in the area. And talking to people around Stillwater this offseason, they don’t expect much of a drop off, if any this year when Allen takes over the Pioneer offense. Look for Allen’s name to quickly rise up the recruiting boards.
[player_tooltip player_id="38676" first="Gabe" last="Brown"] - 2022 Linebacker
Oklahoma has some really good linebacker prospects in the 2021 class. It’s a very deep class at that position. However, the race for the top linebacker in the 2022 class will be interesting to follow. One of the headliners at that position is Stillwater’s [player_tooltip player_id="38676" first="Gabe" last="Brown"]. He broke into the Stillwater lineup last year as a sophomore. This year, Brown plans on taking more of a leadership role and is one of the vocal members of this defense. Brown recently picked up an offer from Oklahoma State and this will just be the start. Another strong season for Brown and he’ll be one of the more sought after 2022 prospects.
[player_tooltip player_id="50786" first="JaKobe" last="Sanders"] - 2023 Offensive Lineman
Stillwater had a lot of hype coming into the 2020 season and on offense it centered around having all of their offensive linemen back. One of the young pups on that offensive line is sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="50786" first="JaKobe" last="Sanders"]. Remember that name over the next few seasons because he appears to be the next elite interior offensive lineman here in Oklahoma. On an O-Line full of older guys, Sanders made an impact last year as a freshman. This year, he’s continued to improve his game and has a very high ceiling. When Stillwater loses a few starters on the O-Line to graduation, Sanders will be the future anchor of this unit.
[player_tooltip player_id="38525" first="Luke" last="McEndoo"] - 2021 Athlete
There are a few prospects in this 2021 class that can be lined up at a variety of positions and make a big impact. Stillwater senior [player_tooltip player_id="38525" first="Luke" last="McEndoo"] is one of the best in that department. McEndoo is the perfect example of a prospect that could be a variety of things at the next level, the one consistent thing is that he’s a football player. If you’re a college, you do what you have to do to get him on your campus and then figure it out from there. Whether it’s on offense or defense, McEndoo has the ability to make an impact. He’s shown that over the last three seasons for Stillwater and is continuing that this fall.
[player_tooltip player_id="38521" first="Qwontrel" last="Walker"] - 2021 Running Back
We wrote a lot about the recruitment of [player_tooltip player_id="38521" first="Qwontrel" last="Walker"] in this week’s Uncommitted Spotlight. He’s arguably one of the most underrated recruits in the 2021 class. And it’s only because of his height. He’s a few yards away from eclipsing 6,000 career rushing yards. Despite questions about his size, Walker has shown the durability to do this against some of the best teams in the state. Last week, against Santa Fe, Walker found the end zone five times, four of which were in the first half when the Pioneers put the Wolves away early. Now he looks to continue his climb up the all time rushing record book this week.
[player_tooltip player_id="38522" first="Steven" last="Brown"] - 2021 Wide Receiver
Just about everything that we’ve written about [player_tooltip player_id="38521" first="Qwontrel" last="Walker"] can be said about his teammate [player_tooltip player_id="38522" first="Steven" last="Brown"]. The senior wide receiver is without a doubt one of the best in the state. However, he’s perceived to be undersized and therefore under-recruited. Throw on the tape and watch what Brown has done against defenders. He’s one of the quickest route runners in Oklahoma. His size doesn’t matter because defenders can’t stay with him. He separates from defenders in the blink of an eye. Just like Walker, someone will take a chance on Brown at the next level and he will pay off in a big way.
This Week - AT 6A-D1’s #4 Mustang
This is the very definition of a trap game. Although you can make the argument that because Mustang is so highly ranked that they should have every bit of Stillwater’s attention. But we can’t help but look ahead at what’s next for the Pioneers. With a win on Friday night, that sets up a 1 vs 2 showdown with Bixby next week. A rematch of the last two state title games in 6A-D2. However, that’s next week. Stillwater will have their work cut out for them on Friday night with a Mustang team that will want to run the ball at will on the Pioneers. Stillwater can’t afford to get caught looking ahead to next week’s showdown with the Spartans. But we can’t help but get excited for one of the biggest rematches of the year.
