With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
James Wartick – Algona
There will be plenty of production that needs to be replaced on the Algona offense this coming fall.
While Class of 2022 prospect Tyler Manske Tyler Manske 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Algona | 2022 State IA returns at quarterback, the Bulldogs lost the likes of University of Iowa walk-on Wyatt Wegener, Garrett Schmidt and Sammonte Bawden from the unit.
James Wartick, though, appears primed to step in as the leading receiver for Manske. Last year, Wartick caught nine passes for 180 yards and a touchdown, helping lead Algona to the Class 2A state semifinals.
Wartick is also a force on defense, having recorded six sacks and 11 tackles for loss with two fumble recoveries.
Colten Woltman – Cherokee
The Cherokee offense had some bright moments a year ago, and for the Braves to continue that this fall, they will need Colten Woltman to shine.
Woltman, a Class of 2021 prospect, hauled in 17 passes for 234 yards and five touchdowns a year ago. He averaged almost 14 yards per catch and was part of a wide receiver group that recorded over 1,400 yards and 14 scores in the air.
Woltman also played defense, picking up 17.5 tackles with 12 solo stops. He averaged 17 yards per kickoff return and also was the top punt returner for the team.
Matt Christensen – Estherville-LC
The Estherville-LC offensive coaches used Matt Christensen all over the field last season.
But Christensen had his brightest moments split out wide.
He led the team with 19 catches for 371 yards with six touchdowns, averaging almost 20 yards per catch. Christensen also made 23.5 tackles and picked off two passes, returning one for a score.
Christensen threw for 190 yards with two touchdowns and ran for another 237 yards with a score for the Midgets.
Isaac Knutson – Garner-Hayfield/Ventura
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura offense is now in the hands of Isaac Knutson heading into the season.
Knutson ran for 702 yards and four touchdowns, while adding another 87 on nine receptions with a score through the air as a junior. He also had 41.5 tackles and three interceptions on defense, returning one of those for a score.
While the Cardinals graduated leaders Landon Dalbeck and Jared Shaw, they will have Knutson and fellow Class of 2021 prospect Joe Pringnitz to build around.
Brent Scott – Spirit Lake
If you have not checked in on Spirit Lake’s Class of 2021 quarterback Brent Scott, now is the time to do it.
Scott threw for 2,067 yards with 19 touchdowns and just five interceptions a year ago, completing 154 of 244 passes. He sported a 134.3 quarterback rating and averaged over 13 yards per completion.

He was the Spirit Lake punter as well, posting an average of 37 yards per kick as the team went 6-4 and advanced to the Class 2A playoffs.
In the final week of the season a year ago, Scott led the Indians to a 34-29 victory over Garner-Hayfield/Venture by throwing for 205 yards, rushing for 105 and scoring four touchdowns.
