The Huskies have received production from our Minnesota boys, and Thompson has shown the tenacity and possesses the size to make a big impact early on in Dekalb, Illinois. He was a 2018 All- District HM selection as a junior, and is now into his third year starting both ways for the Fire. This year, he has already posted a team best 49 tackles and a sack, and last year had 58 tackles with 3 FF’s and a blocked kick. He has also been successful in track & field, as he qualified for state in 2018 in the discus after throwing a PR 145 feet and 3 inches. He was the first Fire track athlete to qualify for the state meet since 2010. After choosing NIU over North Dakota and almost every NSIC school, the senior was kind enough to sit down with Northstar Football News to give us some exclusive insight into his commitment and his 2019 season.
NFN: Hello, Seth. Please walk us through your recruitment process and how things began, as well as some things you found to be important or interesting about the process.
Thompson: “The recruiting process has been a fun roller coaster. It started at the beginning of my junior year with a variety of game day invites that then turned into junior days, then camp invites. It was all fun and every coach I talked to (throughout the process) was awesome.”
NFN: What made you commit to NIU? What did you like about the program that made them stand out for you?
Thompson: “I committed to NIU because Coach Agpalsa was a coach I wanted to play for and I now he’s going to get the best out of me and will care about me and my future.
Thompson blocks a kick for Holy FamilyI like the direction of the program with the new coaching staff and I think we are going to elevate the program. They stood out to me because I felt at home when I was there and nothing about it was uncomfortable and it all felt natural.”
NFN: What will you miss about playing football in Minnesota and did leaving the state factor into your decision process at all?
Thompson: “I will miss Friday night lights in Minnesota and leaving the state did factor into my decision because I wanted to remain somewhat close to home and the Midwest weather is my favorite.”
NFN: How is the 2019 season going for you as well as Holy Family? What should we expect from the Fire for th rest of the year?
Thompson: “Our season this year has been injury filled and disappointing but we are getting guys back and I see a potential playoff run for the Fire.”
NFN: Anything else you can share about the recruitment process and representing MN and Holy Family on the big stage?
Thompson: “I was contacted mostly through Twitter and NIU also stood out to me because they were transparent and they told me what I had to do and it wasn’t going to be easy. Camps were huge for getting offers just by mainly showing coaches your ability to move and your skills in-person. I’ve had a great season (in 2019) but I’d love to start winning and I am excited to represent my school and state on the big stage because I want to be a role model for the kids from my school and hometown.”
