How in the world Powell is still unsigned is beyond us. In his junior and senior seasons, he combined for 40 sacks while leading the Viking offense as the quarterback, too. A nagging offseason hamstring issue kept him from a few camps, and a few Division II schools have caught wind of his upside. Still, he’s available and if I ran an FCS program, I wouldn’t hesitate to offer.

Powell is one of the most unique two-way prospects in the state. The 2026 standout is Tarboro’s starting quarterback, but he’s also regarded as one of North Carolina’s top edge defenders. His size, athleticism, and versatility allow him to impact the game on both sides of the ball. As Tarboro looks to start the season 2–0, Powell’s leadership and ability to make plays at quarterback and off the edge will be central to the Vikings’ success.

For the past two seasons, he’s pulled double duty as both the starting edge rusher and quarterback for the defending (formerly 1A) state champion Tarboro Vikings. While his future at the next level is primarily at edge, where his explosiveness and natural pass-rushing ability can truly shine, his high school role has showcased just how valuable and adaptable he is. Powell’s potential is sky-high, and because he’s asked to do so much for Tarboro, it’s hard to even put a true ceiling on his game. Once he focuses solely on defense, expect his full talent to be unleashed.

Powell isn’t just an elite pass-rusher, he’s also one of the best quarterbacks in Tarboro history. He can fire off the ball and beat tackles with ease and he has the athleticism and measurements needed to play at the next level. He’s a guy I really want to see in person, because his film is electric.

Tyer Powell might be the most intriguing athlete at the combine, in my opinion. Standing out with a rare blend of size, stats, and versatility, he has all the traits to play at the Power 4 level—particularly as a linebacker or edge rusher.

What makes Powell even more impressive is that half of his production comes from playing quarterback, showing off his athleticism, football IQ, and playmaking ability. Whether it’s under center or coming off the edge, he’s an instant difference-maker on both sides of the ball.

I’m especially excited to see what he can do when he transitions to playing edge full-time. With his frame, motor, and instincts, Powell has the potential to become one of the top defenders in the state.
