Our biggest defensive back stock-riser of the cycle, McWhirter, impressed my colleague Matt Morrow at the CFI Showcase. On the smaller side for a corner, McWhirter is a bulldog in coverage, relentless with his man-matching. He has speed, length, and should continue to grow over the next year and a half. He anchors a South Point secondary that probably doesn’t get enough credit for how it limits quarterbacks.

Something I don’t talk a lot about is individual player growth within a showcase, but that’s exactly what I wanted to highlight when talking about Tucker. I had a coach share with me that Tucker was very receptive to coaching throughout the showcase, and that he would take the knowledge, apply it directly on the next rep, and be successful because of that. By the end of the showcase, he was a totally different player and excelled playing in man coverage. In his school’s scheme, they play a lot of zone, so these opportunities are really important to not only get work at a different skill, but most importantly show college coaches you have some real versatility in your skill set. Tucker definitely did that here, and earned a top performer award for those efforts and talent.

McWhirter is a reliable, high-IQ defensive back who consistently shows up on film as both a tackler and a playmaker. He’s a sure finisher in space, takes good angles, and doesn’t shy away from contact, which makes him dependable on the back end. His 5 interceptions highlight strong ball skills, awareness, and the ability to capitalize on mistakes in coverage. McWhirter plays with confidence, trusts his eyes, and has a natural feel for being around the football. While he may fly under the radar right now, his combination of consistency, toughness, and takeaway production gives him a real chance to emerge as one of the top under-the-radar players in his class as recruiting attention picks up.
