Byrd, one of the top QBs in the state regardless of class, commits to Stony Brook after holding 5+ Division I offers. I have seen Byrd throw a couple of times, and Stony Brook is getting some intriguing traits in a quarterback. First, Byrd is probably the most athletic quarterback in the state. He has shown great burst and explosive movements on a consistent level and can impact the game, escaping the pocket and running the ball both designed and scrambled. His arm is what makes him such an intriguing DI prospect; there is some special natural touch to his game, and he flashes the ability to push the ball down the field. Byrd has some untapped arm strength, and a college weight room could really unlock him, making him an even more impressive prospect for Stony Brook.

Byrd is one of the best quarterbacks and athletes in the state. He shows the burst and twitch with the ball in his hands to make plays with his legs and flashes some really special arm talent with a smooth release and an accurate deep ball.

So why #3 in the class? It will be hard to reach #1 with it being the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year, but Byrd, in one year of Varsity, put some high-quality stuff on tape. You see arm strength, the ability to throw with anticipation, and the ability to move and play with his legs.

He can move up our rankings, and to be honest, I do expect him to. The way he can do it is to be more dominant than he was as a Junior. Well, it is not a “pass.” Byrd played his first year on varsity just last season. He was hot out of the gate but struggled in a few games. The traits of a DI recruit are there, but more consistency and turning up his game to the next level are the next step for Byrd.

Tavion Byrd Tavion Byrd 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB University Prep | 2025 State NY is a 6’1” dual threat QB that will be entering into his senior year next season at University Preparatory Charter. When it came to this past season, Byrd threw for 1,508 passing yards, 17 TD’s, rushed for 341 yards, and had 4 rushing TD’s. Byrd has a strong arm that allowed him to hit many deep TD’s this past season. Many times, Byrd was able to scramble out of trouble and find his intended man down the field. In the situations where Byrd had to find a man down the field, his field vision really stood out in being able to diagnose his progressions to find the correct read. This is a QB that has the speed to run away from the entire defensive unit, so defenders were always on their toes when Byrd did decide to take off. When it came to Byrd’s pure passing accuracy, he was able to make some tough throws, including some outside the numbers and into some very tight windows. Byrd did look very calm and strong in the pocket when making challenging red zone throws such as deep corner routes in the end zone. University Prep has a strong senior QB that will be leading them in 2024, and certainly is not shy to make big time plays for his football team.

Tavion Byrd Tavion Byrd 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB University Prep | 2025 State NY is a really promising young quarterback prospect out of Rochester and has some really solid recruitable measurables. Byrd is long and lean and has some really impressive arm talent. Byrd will be the engine of a UPrep offense that has a ton of playmakers. Byrd is in for a big season and could be a name that blows up this fall not just because of his measurables and skillset but the potential to be the most potent offense in Rochester with several talented playmakers by his side.
