About Tanner
Expert Analysis
Ellis Williams | Prep Redzone Scout
Stech stood out in individual reps, displaying sharp cuts, acceleration out of breaks, and the toughness to haul in grabs through tight coverage. Stech, a senior at Mahnomen, consistently gained separation and showed an advanced feel for timing and space. With his blend of urgency, physical tools, and polished route running, he’s in line for a big senior season, which he should be able to parlay into several collegiate opportunities.

Tanner Stech Tanner Stech 6'0" | 185 lbs | ATH Mahnomen/Waubun | 2026 State MN has been a bona fide all purpose player for Mahonmen-Waubun. Offensively, Stech finished with 337 yards on 18 receptions and 5 touchdowns, while rushing for 312 yards and 5 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 6.8 yards per carry. Stech also recorded 3 interceptions on the secondary and serves as the primary placekicker for the Thunderbirds. Stech may have not received many reps exclusively at WR with so much on his plate, but his reps that he did receive look very promising. Stech has the size, footwork, and agility to win in 1-on-1 matchups, while also showing plenty of speed to burn defenders for the deep ball. Stech’s value undoubtedly makes him an entertaining player to watch, and he could easily find a role as an impact player at the next level.

Man, did I like watching Tanner’s footwork from the first look of him on tape. It doesn’t take long to gauge that this 6’0 185 pounder is a 2026 athlete that shows off a “right time, right place” type of player with his football IQ he shows off pre-snap. As a WR, Tanner intrigues me with his great hands as I like the sudden agile movement that comes on his breaks as a route runner. Those great instincts, show off to me what looks a strong safety incoming that looks like a 2026 target destined for Saturdays as a small school name college coaches will want to know. Twitter

An Outstate athlete and playmaker I’m very excited about in the 2026 class is Mahnomen-Waubun’s 6’1, 185 lb. WR/RB/DB/ATH Tanner Stech. A member of our vaunted All-Underclassmen Team from the 2023 season, Stech is a three-phase contributor on the gridiron – always a good box to check – and is also a multi-sport athlete, another good data point to have. In 2023, he posted 26 carries for 176 yards and a TD, 14 catches for 229 yards and 2 TDs, and 16 tackles and 4 INTs, plus a kickoff return for six. Stech shows off strong hands, good concentration, and ball skills as a receiver, and will fully extend and put his body in harm’s way to complete the catch, and he can also create separation at the top of the route. The 185 lber. is elusive and natural in the open field, and keeps defenders guessing as he approaches and sets up would-be tacklers well, making them commit, before cutting or spinning back the other way. Stech displays quick cuts and light on his feet and is effective at making opponents miss when working laterally. Good balance as a ball carrier as well. As a safety, he’s a rangy MOF defender who does a good job of reading and reacting to the QBs eyes and WRs movement and will come downhill in run support and can tackle in space. One of the most natural and elusive players in the 2026 class right now.
