Expert Analysis
Paul Gregorian | Prep Redzone Scout
Whitten is one of the best two-way players in the region, and has tons of varsity playing experience over the years for the Bulldogs. He is one of the main leaders on this Folsom defense, and flies around with violent intentions from the back end, and is a excellent tackler in open space while exploding through contact and bringing a nice thump, especially for his size. He is truly explosive when breaking to the ball, can close quickly in the open field and redirect without giving up ground with natural ball skills/disciplined eyes in zone coverage. He projects as a safety at the next level, and held five offers before shutting down his recruitment and committing to BYU back in October. He is a very nice addition for the Cougars, and should be able to provide immediate special teams support at that level.

Whitten is an active defender with great versatility to be effective from multiple positions in the secondary. He’s got great anticipation and reactionary quickness to read, react, and break on the ball. Smooth and fluid in the hips he can transition and accelerate out to quickly close space and make a play at the catch point. Speed gives him good range and allows him to sustain and cover the whole field. Physical both in coverage and in run support, initiates contact and is a heavy striker at the POA. Well coached, he’s got good technique/footwork and is very efficient with his movement and reads. First offered by Cal after a strong performance at the Sac State camp in June and recently pulled in an offer from Colorado after an unofficial visit.
