Petersburg has a versatile building block in 2028 QB/ATH Payton Metheny, who has already made an impact in multiple areas during his first two seasons as the starter. Metheny threw for 1,900 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore while adding 150 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground. He also contributed 24 tackles and an interception on defense while handling kicking duties, showing just how much he means to the Vikings’ program. He’s undersized for the quarterback position, but his dual-threat ability and overall versatility make him a difficult player for defenses to account for. Metheny is a multi-sport standout at Petersburg and one of the best overall athletes to know in Class AA.

Game film is very limited of Metheny right now, so a full breakdown of his game will come at a later date. However, he was a big-time producer as a freshman and has the athleticism that will give him options as a prospect for which positions he can play at the next level.

He’s on the smaller side right now but is very athletic and kept his team in a lot of games this season in year one. Metheny’s multi-sport athleticism allows him to be a gifted improviser with the ability to take off and run any time he wants to. Even as a smaller athlete right now, Metheny can hit receivers in stride 50+ yards down the field and throws a pretty deep ball with arc. His film is limited right now but keep your eyes on a potential small school gem for the next three years.
