returns for his senior season looking to build on a breakout year that saw him account for 25 total touchdowns, with the majority coming through the air. The Pinecrest signal-caller is more of a traditional pocket passer than a true dual-threat quarterback, but he has enough mobility to extend plays and pick up yards when needed. Gillis displays good poise in the pocket, throws with confidence, and has a strong understanding of the offense. With another year of experience and several playmakers around him, expectations are high for the Patriots’ leader. If Pinecrest’s offense continues to develop, don’t be surprised to see Gillis eclipse the 40-touchdown mark and emerge as one of the top quarterbacks in the Sandhills region this fall.
I actually debated adding Gillis to the rankings from the watchlist at the midseason point last year, and decided to hold off, knowing he’d make the move if he continued to play well. He completed 60% of his passes last season, and shows nice touch and accuracy on film. For the most part, the pocket passer took care of the ball against a difficult schedule and helped lead the Patriots to an 8-3 record.

Pinecrest | 2027 StateNC, a junior quarterback from Pinecrest, will be leading the County Boyz this weekend. Currently on the Prep Redzone Watch List, Gillis is a prospect whose stock could rise considerably by the time the 2027 recruiting cycle heats up in August.
Gillis plays the position with a true pro-style approach, showing patience and discipline when moving the offense. He rarely forces throws, instead letting plays develop and taking what the defense gives him. At the same time, Gillis has the arm talent to make every throw on the field and isn’t afraid to push the ball downfield and take shots when the opportunity presents itself. His calm demeanor and poise under pressure make him a steady leader at quarterback and a player worth keeping a close eye on throughout the tournament.
After being on our watchlist for several seasons, Gillis finally broke out with a strong junior season as the varsity starter. Gillis threw 17 touchdowns while taking care of the ball, and his recent growth spurt has him looking like a much more viable college prospect and destined for a spot in the rankings.
Gillis has quietly become one of the most intriguing junior quarterbacks in the region. Currently a “watchlist” prospect, his poise, arm strength, and ability to extend plays have made him the X-factor for the Pinecrest Patriots’ offense. Gillis plays with a calm, composed demeanor — never rattled, even in pressure moments — and his elusiveness allows him to turn broken plays into big gains. With a strong arm capable of hitting every level of the field, he’s shown flashes of next-level talent all season long. By the time the offseason rolls around, don’t be surprised if Gillis is regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the area — his ceiling is that high.
Gillis delivered a masterclass performance, going 19-of-25 for 259 yards, 3 touchdowns, and only 1 interception. He was poised, unshaken under pressure, and made the biggest throws when his team needed them most. Gillis’ ability to stay calm and finish drives was the difference-maker, earning him the BigFish honor.

emerged as the top underclassman at the 2nd Annual Carolina Recruits Train & Play, demonstrating composure and leadership well beyond his years. The rising junior commanded the field with confidence, consistently making big-time throws and efficiently moving the ball downfield.
One of Gillis’ most impressive traits was his ability to adapt when plays broke down. Whether extending the play with his legs or directing his receivers to open spots, he showcased excellent field awareness and decision-making. Even in challenging moments — whether it was a missed throw or a dropped pass — Gillis remained poised, never letting frustration affect his game. His resilience and competitive spirit were evident as he battled through adversity and continued to lead his team effectively.
With his maturity, strong arm, and natural leadership, Gillis is undoubtedly a name to watch. As he gains more experience and refines his skills, expect him to draw significant attention from college programs. Keep an eye on this promising young quarterback — his best is yet to come.
Gillis doesn’t have much varsity experience but looks like he could be the guy in 2025. HE has a quick release and pretty good footwork, which allows him top drive the ball. He has all the physical tools needed to be a quality varsity quarterback and we’re excited to see him in a bigger role.
