After a strong 2025 campaign, Pinecrest High School enters the new season with plenty to prove. The Patriots battled through one of the state's toughest leagues, finishing second in the highly competitive Mid-South 7A/8A Conference. Following a season-opening loss, Pinecrest rattled off eight consecutive victories and established itself as a legitimate contender before dropping its regular-season finale. Their season ultimately ended in heartbreaking fashion with a narrow first-round playoff defeat. Now, with several key offensive contributors returning and a talented group of players ready to step into expanded roles, the Patriots are focused on turning last year's success into an even deeper postseason run.

[player_tooltip player_id='1059980' first='Najee' last='Gillis'] returns for his senior season looking to build on a breakout year that saw him account for 25 total touchdowns, with the majority coming through the air. The Pinecrest signal-caller is more of a traditional pocket passer than a true dual-threat quarterback, but he has enough mobility to extend plays and pick up yards when needed. Gillis displays good poise in the pocket, throws with confidence, and has a strong understanding of the offense. With another year of experience and several playmakers around him, expectations are high for the Patriots' leader. If Pinecrest's offense continues to develop, don't be surprised to see Gillis eclipse the 40-touchdown mark and emerge as one of the top quarterbacks in the Sandhills region this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1720446' first='Eric' last='Melton'] is expected to step into a much larger role for Pinecrest this season. The 5-foot-11 rising senior was already a key contributor in the Patriots' offense last year, finishing with nearly 500 receiving yards and five touchdowns. With several offensive pieces gone, Melton now becomes one of the primary weapons defenses must account for every week. His experience, reliable hands, and ability to make plays in space make him a valuable target for [player_tooltip player_id='1059980' first='Najee' last='Gillis']. Opposing defenses will likely key on both Melton and Gillis, but if the senior wideout can continue to produce despite the extra attention, he has the potential for a breakout campaign and could emerge as one of the Sandhills Region's top playmakers.

Dayton Knight is set to take over as Pinecrest's lead back this season and could be one of the biggest breakout candidates in the Sandhills Region. The rising junior showed flashes of his potential in a reserve role last year, making the most of his opportunities and delivering several strong performances. Now with the starting job firmly in his hands, Knight is expected to see a significant increase in touches and production. His combination of vision, toughness, and playmaking ability gives the Patriots a reliable weapon in the backfield. As defenses focus on slowing down Pinecrest's passing attack, Knight could be the player who benefits most, positioning himself for a huge jump in numbers and a standout junior campaign.

Carter Jackson is another player poised for a larger role in Pinecrest's offense this season. The rising senior wide receiver saw limited opportunities a year ago but still made an impact, finding the end zone multiple times. Jackson brings good speed to the perimeter and has the ability to stretch the field, creating big-play opportunities for the Patriots' passing attack. With several targets needing to step into expanded roles, expect Jackson to become a key weapon for quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1059980' first='Najee' last='Gillis'].
[player_tooltip player_id='2147887' first='Zelden' last='Marsh'] is the leader of the Pinecrest defensive front and one of the most important players on the roster heading into his senior season. While he projects as an interior defensive lineman at the next level, Marsh will primarily line up on the edge for the Patriots, where his athleticism and versatility create matchup problems for opposing offenses. Despite not playing a full workload last season, he still managed to record six sacks, showcasing his ability to get after the quarterback. With an expanded role and another year of development, Marsh has all the tools to become one of the top defensive playmakers in the Sandhills Region.

Tyler Johnson is a name to watch on Pinecrest's defense this season. Johnson plays with a high motor and competitive edge, consistently finding ways to impact the game when given opportunities.
