One of the most promising 2029 prospects in the state, Spear has been balling out during his sophomore season on varsity. Minneapolis Southwest is 4-1, and that is in no small part due to Spear. Last Friday he took 18 carries for 130 yards, finding the end zone twice in the process. It’s his 3rd 100+ yard game of the year, and his second game with 2 TDs. After watching his tape, I’d say the strongest facet of his game as a ball carrier is his vision. He does a great job of anticipating run lanes, reading his blockers, and finding the edges to create chunk plays downfield. This kind of play, out of a sophomore in particular, is very impressive, and I’m excited to see what he evolves into long-term.

A PRZMN Spring Showcase standout performer, Spear has some strong athletic numbers backing his game, which included light, nimble, feet, twitchy moves in the open field and as a route runner, and an overall dynamic skillset that can be used a lot of different ways offensively. Spear rushed for 105 yards at a 5.2 YPC clip and a TD in the Lakers‘ 27-3 defeat of St. Louis Park in Week 1.

Concise, quick feet that can make ya miss in a phone booth, has the speed to take the edge on a defense, and shows some good contact balance, not to mention leg drive post-contact. Good vision and burst as well. I smell some serious production out of the Lakers‘ backfield this fall.

Spear was sudden, very comfortable in all kinds of footwork and general RB drill work and competition setting, and had a ton of juice as a route runner out of the backfield. Spear popped off one of the best individual plays and highlights I saw between the two sessions of the PRZMN Spring Showcase, shaking a helpless LB so badly that he seemed to be stuck in the mud while simultaneously trying not to get his ankles broken by the SW MPLS product. Spear was downright filthy at the top of the route and soft-handed as a pass-catcher, which proved to be a dangerous combination at the Plymouth Community Center. Should be a breakout season this fall for Spear and some fellow Minneapolis Southwest 2029s.
