After seeing Max rush for nearly 300 yards and 4 touchdowns live against a really good Stuart Cramer team this past season, I was ready to crown him as a Top 5 back in his class in North Carolina. That’s how impressive he was. The workload that he can handle as a back alone is tremendous, but then when you turn around and see him play linebacker on defense, it’s almost unbelievable. Max is a throwback in an era of specialization, and that goes a long way with me. The power and determination on every carry are special, and he’s a leader for his team. He’s a very strong candidate for this 704 Junior Bowl team.

After doing his thing on offense with nearly 250 yards on the ground with 24 carries, Max produced 11 tackles on defense, really looking impressive against the running game of Stuart Cramer primarily. Max does a good job of coming downhill against the running game and making solid tackles in space. Max can also be a plugger against interior linemen and lead backs in the hole, allowing his teammates to make tackles efficiently.

was a man on a mission in this game. Before we get to the stats, just know that I haven’t seen a performance this impressive on the field since covering Quavaris Crouch at Harding HS in 2017, and he was the #1 player in the country at the time. The main reason I say that is because Max had 24 carries for 252 yards and 5 touchdowns offensively in this one. Then, he went out and played nearly snap on defense and had 11 tackles from his linebacker position. We’ll talk about his defense in a seperate article, but offensively, Max dominated this game, along with his offensive line. Max showed some breakaway speed in the open field and the ability to run through 2nd and 3rd-level tackle attempts. And he simply just didn’t get tired with the heavy workload. When you’re the focal point offensively, everyone knows it, and you still produce at this level – that’s special stuff. I talked with Max after the game.

Max plays running back and linebacker for the Bulldogs, but I think he’s more impactful, and his future right now is on the defensive side of the football. I like the aggression Max plays with – he plays defense with an offensive mindset, which is the best way I can describe it. Max simply loves getting to the football and putting offensive guys in the dirt who have the football in their hands. I think him bulking up a little bit will allow him to take that pounding that comes with being a two-way player even more and he’ll be able to have a consistent impact for all four quarters on both sides of the ball.

Max had a strong season for a Burns team that was competitive all year long. As a linebacker, Max had 73 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks on the year. On offense, Max played running back and 48 carries for 408 yards and 7 touchdowns, and also had 2 touchdown catches. High-level production on both sides of the ball. Max is an extremely hard runner who already shows the strength to run through weak tackle attempts on the 2nd and 3rd levels of the defense. As a linebacker, Max gets to the ball with bad intentions and is a strong solo tackler already. I’m excited to see him progress in the future.
