One of the reasons I believe Cedar Creek has a good shot at a state championship are the seniors returning on defense in 2024. With a ton of experience under his belt,

is leading the charge for Cedar Creek’s defensive front. Mandel is a physically demanding defender lining up interiorly for the Pirates. Equipped with upper body strength and a low approach towards blockers, Mandel specializes in bull rushing the pocket and collapsing it from within. Not only does he have the strength to impose his will on linemen, but he has the finesse, quickness, and hand technique to get past blockers with speed. This showed last season as he was able to sack the QB 7 times. A rock in the middle of the field, good luck trying to shake Mandel from his position in the middle. He does not get moved often, and with that can swallow up any run heading his direction. Mandel is extremely skilled in both the pass rush game and in run defense, and any team would be lucky to have him on their roster.

I am not sure which direction Cedar Creek is from Glassboro, but the Owls are traveling that way for the summer. Temple’s canvas of South Jersey continued as

was extended an offer this week. A prospect I had the opportunity to watch live recently, it comes as no surprise. As far as I can tell this is a big offer for Pettiford, as getting the first one is often typically the most difficult.

‘s game was one I was already acquainted with. Turns out that my eyes did not deceive me. Pettiford’s abilities were immediately evident during indy as he was able to work himself tight around the cone as he rolled his hips through. Likely having the ability to play either edge or interior, Pettiford has the speed to set up the inside rush and the size-strength combination to whoop up in the middle. Lastly, there might have only been one prospect who just maybe had a faster get off than Pettiford.

, who was credited with 52 tackles (18 solo) and 7 sacks last fall, is abnormally athletic for an interior defensive lineman. To my eye, many of the plays and pressures he creates are made by going under blocks, rather than fighting through or over them. Typically, this goes against conventional coaching; however, Pettiford makes it work for him with his acceleration/closing speed and his agility, which prevents him from being out maneuvered in tight spaces. Backfield penetration is created by Pettiford’s arm-over, swimming past ducking linemen, and his rip move, that allows him to violently take his gap. In pass rushing situations, the talented interior lineman works in-and-out fakes to create two-way go’s for him to choose from. In such situations should he be unable to get home, we see Pettiford get his hands up to prevent clear sight lines for opposing quarterbacks. Lastly, Pettiford does a nice job of ensuring he gets his hands on the man in front of him. If I was Pettiford’s position coach, the one drill I would drill to death this spring is one I plan to use with my own team: stimulus-based get off, combined with tight hands on the post of the sled, while locking out his hips. Given his athleticism, an improved get off, in addition to activating his hips and improving his hand placement (half-man), will have Pettiford turn into an absolute monster ready to play college ball a season early.

. Mandel is another quick interior defensive lineman. He’s able to move his body around to put him in the right position to either knock down a pass attempt or clog up the hole. In the pass rush, he is great at slapping offensive linemen’s hands away from him, and if he needs to he can drive them straight back into their quarterback. Even when he deals with linemen taller and heavier, it’s no problem for Mandel. You won’t have an easy time breaking a tackle from Mandel, and it shows in his 42 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2022.
