I have a lot of confidence in Yoney as Mohave jumps back into 4A after competing in 3A the past handful of years. Despite limited action in 2024, Yoney possesses all of the athletic traits to be a top QB in 4A and is well deserving to be on those recruiting boards. A very good all around athlete with big play top end speed on the ground and can dice up a defense in the pocket when he has time as well. We will definitely be keeping an eye on Yoney all throughout his senior campaign.

Don’t underestimate Yoney due to the size of the school, as he’s shown all the signs and checked all the boxes to deserve a shot at the next level, and projects to have a breakout senior campaign with a full, healthy season. While Mohave bumps up from 3A to 4A, this provides Yoney with a significant increase in competition which certainly raises the bar for him, and he seems hungry for the challenge. As mentioned in my previous eval of Yoney, he possesses excellent twitch- frequently showing the ability to make opponents miss and eat dirt, while flashing good top end speed once he hits that second level as well. A very smart ball carrier as well- showing the ability to read and pull, knows when to bounce outside, when to abandon pass, and when to square his shoulders.

Yoney has been on my radar for a few years now, and he holds a ton of promise heading into his senior campaign as a 4-year starter with Mohave bumping from 3A to 4A and looks hungry to make some noise. As a runner, he shows excellent twitch and COD with loose hips to make opponents miss, and good top end speed to finish big plays. Really good vision and decision making when running a read options and has a natural feel to pull it and stick his foot in the ground and get vertical with burst. Don’t sleep on him as a passer, as he can sit back and dice up a defense when given the time to throw as well. Good placement and timing with the ability to finesse throws in between opponents and work high-low or low-high depending on the coverage and route combo. In just 6 games played last season, Yoney totaled 17 TD’s, with 7 passing and 10 rushing. A legit dual-threat QB that was a preseason POY candidate a year ago and has all the potential to be a top QB in 4A. Very electric player with a high ceiling this fall.

, already a standout at Mohave with his unique blend of accuracy, decision-making, and dual-threat ability. Not boasting the strongest arm in the state, he picks apart defenses with pinpoint accuracy. His completion rate of 67% on the season highlights that precision and mature approach to the game. Yoney will lull a defense to sleep by taking the underneath routes, baiting them in, and then will take his shot over the top for a big gain. The scariest part of his game is his ability to terrorize defenses on the ground, just as well as through the air. His quick feet and excellent top speed allow him to constantly pull away from defenders, but he’s still a strong enough player to fight for the tough yards when his team needs it. Finishing the year averaging over 100 rushing yards a game, Yoney proved he’s one of the most dynamic play makers in the state. When you combine the passing and rushing, he totaled 45 touchdowns to just seven turnovers – six interceptions and one fumble. It’s hard to imagine how he can improve on such a productive sophomore season; but with another offseason of work and the past year of experience under his belt, the sky is the limit for this young man.

Sophomore sensation Joe Yoney did it again, delivering a stellar performance and it’s becoming the norm for Mohave. In just the first quarter, Yoney dazzled with two aerial touchdowns and added another on the ground with his great top end speed, setting the tone for his team early on. Not just a prodigious passer, he lit up the field with his rushing prowess, leaving defenders trailing in his open-field sprints. Yoney is always ready to tally up the points, and his desire to make big plays shows in his game. As he gains more experience, expect him to appreciate those finer nuances of the game, like capitalizing on the underneath routes. The future’s bright for Joe Yony Jr. – and he’s only getting started.
