Nice-sized cornerback who plays heads-up football. Stays with assignments, effectively diagnoses plays, and fires upfield defending the run. Incredibly instinctive, diagnoses plays before they unfold, and is constantly around the action. Times pass defenses and works to get off blocks to make plays against screen passes. Opportunistic and moves to the ball consistently.

What Thompson does well is disguising his coverage for quite some time. He often can stick to a man early but use his speed to drop back into the necessary space. This is when Thompson plays his best zone coverage, rather than him just dropping in right away. Thompson has excellent mirroring ability and does a nice job to sink his hips.
