Considering Zimmerman’s prominence as a run-heavy offense and the limited number of catches he had last season,

‘s performance in the passing game for the Thunder was insane. Smuda finished with 342 yards on only 8 catches (42.8 YPC) and 5 TDs. Smuda had TD catches of 33, 75, 21, 60, and 87 yards during the 2025 season. A tall, physical receiver who doubles both at WR and TE, Smuda was lined up in numerous areas on the field for the offense and excelled at nearly every spot, with his length and strong hands allowing him to catch over the seam for a chunk gain as well as possessing impressive speed to break away behind the secondary for a wide open play. Even with the Thunder continuing to roll with the run, Smuda should be a dangerous weapon who can create big-play potential to stretch the passing game and balance out the offense.

, so to see some recruiting steam beginning to gather around the 6’6 junior is exciting to see. Also a competitor in track & field, which includes reported PRs of 20’5″ in the long jump and 43’2″ in the triple, Smuda has also tested extremely well at various offseason stops, especially on the summer camp circuit. Highlighted by some hand-timed 40s in the 4.7s and broad jumps into the 9′ range, Smuda has a somewhat ridiculous personal stat line in 2025 to the tune of 5 catches for 277 yards and 5 TDs for a 55.4 YPC average, and prospective college programs are beginning to take notice. Smuda is fresh off an unofficial gameday visit to South Dakota, with North Dakota, Cornell, and Washington State contacting the ’27 athlete prior to the season.
Smuda can get open at the top of the route and easily take the top off the defense, is willing to go over the middle, put his body on the line, and finish catches through contact and oncoming hits, and tracks and plays the ball well in the air, good balance for his size, and is a willing and effective blocker – both inside the box and out in space – that can open holes for his tailbacks. Explosive is the big word that comes to mind when watching Smuda’s fun midseason tape. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for Smuda and his Zimmerman Thunder.
