James Flanigan
About James
Expert Analysis

The toughness shines through in a few different ways from the GB Notre Dame athlete. First off, James is an outstanding run blocker. He has the ability to overpower his opponent and reset the line of scrimmage. The senior also has shown that he has excellent power and contact balance after the catch to punish tacklers and force the defense to gang tackle him. Last, Flanigan helped his team win a state championship while also playing both sides of the trenches. On defense the senior shined as a DE. Having the impact he has on both sides of the ball is enough to earn the toughness category on its own. We need this type of grit from our TE.

Stats: 9 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 4 TFLs, Blocked for 425+ Yards
Notre Dame has an impressively versatile athlete coming to town in 2025. The 6’5″ 230 lbs TE/DE dominated on both sides of the ball without ever touching the ball. On offense we got a great look at his run blocking. James is able to quickly get hands on, gain leverage advantage, and drive those legs through his man and create a consistent push in the trenches. The senior is able to handle LBs or DLs and he has that mean streak like an OL when he finishes his blocks. On defense the senior was all over the backfield. James gave the Catholic Memorial passing game nightmares because he forced the QB out of the pocket and was even able to chase him down multiple times for sacks. Flanigan did it all in the championship game.

Yes, there’s another Wisconsin-born TE on this star-studded list of Midwest athletic freaks, and this one is heading to Notre Dame. The son of a former Notre Dame standout and NFL Third Round Draft Pick in 1994, as well as the grandson of a 1967 NFL Second Round Draft Pick out of Pitt, Flanigan has NFL ability in his blood, and it’s already showing up nicely in his prep career. At 6’5, 230 pounds, Flanigan is fresh off a monster 2024 outdoor track season, posting PRs of an 11.44 in the 100M, 59’2.75″ in the shot put, and 181’1″ in the discus. He’s also clocked a 6′ high jump during the 2023 season and a 17’3″ long jump as a freshman. Flanigan won a Wisconsin Division 2 state title in the discus as a 10th grader while also capturing a silver medal in the shot put, and this year, he won the Wisconsin D2 shot put championship and placed second in the discus. Additionally, he’s also a heckuva hockey player, playing on the wing for a Notre Dame Academy hockey team that went 28-0 and won a WIAA D1 state title in March of 2023. In the recent 2023-24 season, he scored 28 points in the 2023-24 season, including 12 goals and 16 assists and was also named to the Team Wisconsin 16U AAA team in 2022-23. Talk about a multi-sport athlete!
On the gridiron, Flanigan is a two-way contributor as a TE and LB, and displays good burst and solid speed that was utilized well by the NDA staff, who aligned him as an inline TE where he could match up against slower LBs and safeties. The 6’5 pass catcher can make catches in traffic and through oncoming hits across the middle and is powerful after the catch, showing that he can bounce defenders off his pads, keeps his feet churning through contact, use that powerful lower body to eat weaker tackle attempts for lunch, and he use his size and length to his advantage. I found myself impressed by how Flanigan can breakdown and adjust in space to corral second and third level defenders as a blocker, which includes swiping back across the LOS and he’s a physical and willing blocker who uses his length and technique effectively. Strong enough to handle DEs along the LOS and nimble and controlled to block quicker defenders out in space. This kid could play any sport and be the best in the state at it. Notre Dame is getting a stud.

In an absolutely loaded TE Class, James has locked himself into the #1 spot. The Notre Dame commit has so many tools you hope to find in a HS player. The elite size is there at 6’6″ 225 lbs, and there is plenty of room for him to add the bulk needed to play at the Power 4 level. In the passing game, James is a solid route runner, but it is size to box out defenders and long arms to further create separation that makes him a nightmare at the catch point. James is a natural receiver with the ability to twist, elevate, or contort his body to get his hands on the ball. After the catch the big man has an excellent balance of speed and power. The power in particular gives us a lot of highlights where he is leaving a trail of broken tackles. James also shines as a blocker. He has elite range to be able to pull and lead. His use of leverage and his lower body strength create a massive push against DLs. Flanigan is a special prospect with a high ceiling. Big things are ahead for him at Notre Dame.

Stats: 4 Receptions, 68 YardsrnThe premier talent in this game was the ’25 TE out of Green Bay Notre Dame, who is committed to play college for Notre Dame. There is so much to like here. Great size and catch radius with soft hands. His routes were smooth, and he was able to create plenty of space out of his breaks. After the catch the big target proved to be a nightmare to drag down. It always took 4-5 defenders to drag him down. Flanigan was also a big impact on the ground. He could drive DEs off the line and get outside leverage to spring his RB to the outside. James has a very well rounded game. I can’t wait to watch his final season.

There are some imposing and renowned young bucks in the 2025 Wisconsin recruiting scene, many of whom emerged onto the P5 recruiting scene early and in force. Coming out of what has been a talent-rich Green Bay area the past few cycles, Notre Dame Academy 6’6, 225 lb. TE/LB James Flanigan has been a familiar name since he was a freshman and has been consistently and impressively raising his stock into the upper echelons of the 2025 TE ranks. The son of former Notre Dame DL Jim Flanigan, young James has some heavy duty options early into the process, as the home state Badgers became his first official offer at the end of January, which led to Notre Dame offering the legacy recruit, which both preceded Penn State, Mizzou, and Michigan also offering B1G or SEC scholarships. As a sophomore, Flanigan was named First Team All-Conference, Conference WR of the Year, and All-Region as a TE, and also earned a Second Team All-Conference nod as a linebacker. He posted 22 receptions for 520 yards and 9 TDs with 66 tackles, 7 TFLs, and 3 sacks to boot, and he opens his tape in eye-popping fashion, as the 6’6, 225 lber. runs down a loose Pulaski RB over 70 yards downfield in an impressive display of speed, and he adds an exclamation point on top by punching the ball loose in an fantastic display of speed, hustle, and instincts. The rest of the tape is great too, as Flanigan used that speed to create big runs after the catch, where he can run through and stay upright past tackle attempts at his lower body, and he also has good reps of him laying strong tackles and blocks around the box, snagging the ball out of the air and through contact, and generally causing havoc on both sides of the ball. The size/speed/strength combo is outstanding, especially at this age, and he’s a sure bet to be one of the best TEs in the class and in the nation going forward. Wisconsin is a must-stop for the 2025 cycle!

The most impressive newcomer on this list is the new TE1. James is a dominant 6’6″ 220 lbs. The big man’s blend of size, athleticism, and strength leave little doubt that he is an FBS level talent. He is able to run away from the defense with his 4.7 long speed. His long strides eat up yards. In the run game, Flanigan gets to flash his strength. At this level, James is already like an extra lineman on the field. He can dig DL out of the trenches and get a push to reset the line of scrimmage downfield. James is also a consistent route runner. He gets to his landmarks, is able to make clean changes of direction, and can maintain good speed throughout the break. Lastly, the big man provides a massive, go-to target with soft, reliable hands. He has already received an offer from the home state Badgers.
