Expert Analysis

Esa Wittingberg is quickly becoming one of the most coveted defensive line prospects in New Jersey’s 2027 class. At 6’3”, 220 pounds, he brings rare explosiveness off the edge and pairs it with a surprisingly polished pass-rush toolkit for such a young prospect.
Wittingberg consistently wins with his first step, but what really separates him is his technique. He uses his hands at a high level — creating space, attacking the chest plate, and controlling reps with mature placement and timing. He also shows real bend around the edge, allowing him to flatten and finish plays in the backfield. Rep after rep, the consistency pops off the tape.
East Orange had a historic season, finishing the regular season undefeated, and Wittingberg played a significant role in that success. With his blend of size, twitch, and technical ability, he’ll be a focal point again next fall as EO looks to repeat its dominance.
He already holds offers from NC State, Duke, Boston College, and Minnesota, and that list is only going to grow. Wittingberg’s trajectory is firmly upward.

, he is no exception to this adage. With his type of length, he is hard to block when he creates separation at the line of scrimmage, most notably when we see him use the swipe to neutralize the hands of offensive tackles. Wittingburg takes very good angles when pursuing the quarterback, keeping contain and judging speed to save plays. I think that Wittingburg has an exceptional first and second step out of his stance. His strides allow him to beat offensive tackles to his 5-yard behind landmark easily when pass rushing. Yes, he correctly spills; however, that same rip technique can be better applied when he rips inside. Additionally, many of his clips get cut off before the conclusion as he closes in on the quarterback. Does he make the play? Does the pass get off? Does he disrupt the pass? These questions I wish to have answered.

has turned heads this summer, picking up nine offers from schools like Pitt, Syracuse, and Temple. At 6’3”, with length, burst, and a true edge frame, he’s exactly what colleges want. Coming off an eight‑sack season as just a sophomore, Esa has the tools and the upside to push for New Jersey’s sack lead in 2025‑26.

is a name more people need to know heading into 2025. The 6’3”, 210-pound edge rusher brings a rare mix of size, athleticism, and technique for a young player. You can tell he’s been developed correctly—his pass-rush arsenal is more advanced than most at this stage. On tape, he shows flashes of spin moves, swims, and rips, all while staying controlled and disciplined in his approach.
What separates Esa is his football IQ. He doesn’t just crash off the edge without purpose—he diagnoses plays, stays home when needed, and reacts with patience. He consistently makes the right decisions, whether reading a screen, setting the edge, or crashing down on a pulling guard.
His production speaks for itself—eight sacks, ten tackles for loss—and he still hasn’t scratched the surface. With Lehigh and Morgan State offers, Wittingburg feels like a player whose stock will rise fast. Another big season could solidify him as one of the top defensive players in North Jersey. Keep him on your radar.
