After a rough start to the season, Northfield has been on a tear, culminating in a monster 35-0 win over Rochester John Marshall in Week 3, cementing them as a legit Top-20 team in 5A. Ness was inarguably the heart and soul of this Raiders squad, and he showed in on Friday night. He finished 8/14 through the air for 200 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, and a very solid 111.6 passer rating. His time in the end zone doesn’t stop there, however. Ness also took 7 carries for an additional 56 yards with 2 more rushing TDs to boot! I know he gets a lot of love for his work as a DB, but I think Ness could have real potential to break out as a quarterback. He should be a senior to watch closely throughout the remainder of the season.

Shoutout the Northfield Raiders! The 507 Class 5A competitor has taken over the Raiders‘ QB1 role in 2026, and he’s running with the opportunity, especially combined with his usual production from his DB spot. Ness has posted 9 tackles and 2 INTs through two weeks of action, as well as going 13-21 (61.9%) for 253 yards and 5 TDs to 0 INT through the air + 9 rushes for 37 yards on the ground.

The junior year tape is all DB film, where Ness displays impressive defensive range in run support and pass coverage, acting as a rangy MOF defender in pass coverage from the defensive secondary. He’s also a good tackler who runs the alley effectively and will come up and stick you from his safety spot. Noticeable quickness out of his breaks, naturally undercuts WRs with good timing. Good hands as well, and Ness does an overall great job of mirroring ball carriers, breaking down in space, and making strong 1v1 tackles to halt ball carriers in their tracks. Davis Ness Davis Ness 5'10" | 180 lbs | DB Northfield | 2027 State MN has already proven to be a viable piece of the Raiders’ secondary at the Free Safety position. Ness recorded 29 tackles and 2 INTs during the 2025 season. Ness proves capable as the deep man in the middle of their secondary, showcasing great sideline-to-sideline range, being able to track the ball and read the QB’s eyes to bait him for an INT while also showing solid capabilities as a run-stopper who can act as the last line of defense and chase down a ball-carrier before he can break away. Ness also provides value as the Raiders’ primary return specialist, handling both kicks and punts with consistency and explosiveness. 2026 will be an interesting season for Ness, as he is slated to compete for the starting QB position following the departure of JT Graupmann this offseason, and there is a real chance that he could have a huge presence as an all-purpose threat for the Raiders in 2026.

Northfield has been a talent factory as of late, and their 2027 class has some talented, exciting, and high-ceiling prospects that college coaches need to prioritize when evaluating and vetting 2027 Minnesotans. Northfield FS Davis Ness had a solid season with the Raiders‘ in 2025, finishing the fall with 29 tackles, 2 INTs, 8 punt returns for 85 yards, 7 kick returns for 164 yards, also 1-4 on passing, according to MNFootballHub.

Ness is dangerous, productive, and rangy as the single-high or two-high SAF who can cover sideline-to-sideline and patrol the MOF with effectiveness, and he read/processes quickly and can make effective breaks on the football all over the field from his SAF spot. Ness will come downhill and make 1v1 tacklers as that free defender and tackler, with good form and strength at the contact point, and he displays good play speed and runs the alley with pace and patience, as well as shed blocks and make tackles in a single defensive rep.
