Nothing catches my attention quite like a 6’3, 200 lb. safety, especially on a Class 4A semifinalist. Orono’s Dane Kanwischer Dane Kanwischer 6'3" | 200 lbs | DB Orono | 2026 State MN was a can’t-miss, eye-catching prospect on more than one occasion last season in front of PRzMN’s eyes, including in state semifinal action. We were lucky enough to attend one of the year’s best contests of the 2024 regular season, when Orono took on Totino–Grace in what ended as a last-minute, go-ahead TD and 2pt conversion by the Eagles late in the 4th quarter. Here’s what we wrote about Kanwischer from that physical playoff preview:
“Eye-catching size from the FS position that passed the eye test with flying colors, Kanwischer was an imposing, physical, and athletic presence at the back of the Spartans’ defense. Kanwischer has good speed for his size and was able to corral, run down, and generally act as a safety valve for his defense when RBs would occasionally get loose. easily able to clean up messes thanks to his strong ability to tackle in space and in 1v1 situations, Kanwischer also had some boom at the contact point and laid some massive hits on TG RBs throughout the game and I liked how he always seemed to be in good position and able to clean up big plays of the Eagles. Kanwischer is a big reason why Orono’s defense is so stingy, and his eye-catching size at the position really helps improve his stock as a collegiate prospect. He’s also a heckuva athlete and was doing some impressive things during halftime warm-ups just messing around out there, so I am suddenly very bullish on his projection to the college level.”
That’s only an in-person eval, and although Kanwischer didn’t have any 2024 film publicly available at the time of the PRzMN 2026 Official Rankings Update, he finally uploaded some this month, so take his current ranking with a grain of salt and know that it will be updated some time in the very near future.
Kanwischer is a strong, confident, and technically sound tackler at the third level of the defense who can consistently succeed as the last line of defense, and make crucial 1v1 tackles in space and in the hole, no matter how big or fast the ball carrier. Takes good angles to the ball, squeezes the space out of the ball carrier, and brings his hips through contact. Swallows up ball carriers and is one of the best tacklers in Minnesota. He put a couple of big hits on ball carriers off a full head of steam too, and runs the alley effectively, is rangy in run support, and sticks RBs where they stand, and doesn’t allow extra gains or yardage post-contact. The 6’3 safety also can cover 1v1 in man coverage out of the slot, showing he can read and break on the football with effectiveness and physicality. He’d be an excellent SS or even LB at the next level, and I hope college coaches have him on their radar, he’s a fun watch for any lover of defensive backs. Now that he has film, we’d love to get some eyes on this kid in a camp setting. Hope to see him soon!
