James just kept getting better as the season progressed, ultimately ending the year with over 1,700 rushing yards. He flashed late as a pass-catcher and really showed his ability to wait for holes to open as a runner. He could probably use a semester in a college weight program, but I like his chances to play early at the next level.
Damonte showed everything in person here that we’ve seen on film all season – great speed in the open field, nice burst out of change of direction, and the ability to win in the passing game against slower linebackers in space. Damonte also did well in the individual portion of the showcase, just backing up a great season with even stronger validation of his overall skills.
For the past couple of years, Damonte has been his team’s first, second, and third option on offense as the Vikings rely a ton on what he can do with the ball in his hands. Damonte has excellent speed, and he uses that to get into open spaces for a couple of big plays per game. Damonte consistently has had rushing games of over 100 yards over the last couple of years, and he was our preseason All-State running back, which he has backed up very well so far this season.
James is in the midst of a breakout year, and it’s amazing what can happen with speed and burst. He excels in all three phases of the game, but we like him best as a speedy running back with great vision. He’s on pace for over 150 yards this season, and he’s been more explosive, picking up yards in bunches, especially as conference play has started.
Damonte came on strong this past season for a Central Cabarrus team that relied on running the football for their offensive success. Damonte is fast in the open field and still has room to grow physically. If Damonte can add some weight and not lose his speed and agility that makes him special, he has some college football in his future. He will be the focal point next season offensively for the Vikings and he should show similar production once again.
James plays both sides of the ball, but we think his college future is as a running back. He’s a taller back with the frame to add more weight and when he does, he’s going to be a force at the next level. He has great vision and the ability to follow his blockers. He’s quick to change direction and eats up yards quickly. He went over 1,000 yards this season, a testament to his improvement.
