announced his commitment to Oregon State on Wednesday.
Purnell had 84 tackles with four interceptions for a Lincoln team that won a state championship last season.
He also had offers from Cal, San Diego State, Utah and Washington among others. Purnell is the sixth player from California in Oregon State’s 2026 recruiting class and the third defensive back.

Purnell took his first official visit of the offseason to Oregon St. this past weekend. He’s one of the top defensive backs in San Diego offering a high-level combination of length, ball skills, and coverage instincts. Currently holds over ten D-I offers including Cal, Utah, UNLV, and most recently added an offer from Fresno St. in late May. Look for Purnell’s recruitment to heat up over the coming months.

Purnell added a pair of offers from UNLV and NAU in February. It was the first offers for the talented Lincoln DB since picking up seven last offseason, including Washington, Cal, and Utah. Smooth, lengthy cover-corner that totaled 84 tackles and 4 INTs as a junior. Purnell is one of the DB prospects in San Diego and continues to put his name on the West Coast radar.

Purnell flashed impressive speed during the one-on-ones and was in the pocket of receivers consistently on deep balls.
He also had a knack for turning his head at the last second to locate and make a play on the ball. Purnell has a ton of upside.

Purnell continued to build off his strong freshman season after transferring into Lincoln from San Marcos. He’s a lengthy perimeter CB at 6’1”/175 that plays physical at the LOS and can cover over the top in soft coverage. He’s a reliable tackler in space and shows good timing breaking up passes at the catch-point. Purnell, who picked up offers from Washington and Washington St. in January, should continue to generate interest from the West Coast’s major D-I programs over the course of the offseason.

Purnell accounted for two turnovers in Lincoln’s win: forcing a fumble that was recovered by LB Micah Valenzuela and making an acrobatic INT. He showed great body control and ball skills adjusting to a tipped pass while running with a crossing route in man coverage. He’s a talented cover-corner with length (6’1″170), is active in passing lanes on the perimeter, and tackles low and aggressive in the flat. Purnell picked up his third INT of the season vs. Helix and will look to continue the defensive playmaking during Lincoln’s playoff run.
