One of the top defensive presences’ in 6A this fall, Park of Cottage Grove’s free safety Brett Salmonson once again had a productive Friday night against Roseville and was a big part of the Wolfpack’s 28-7 victory. He recorded 12 tackles, one TFL, 158 total yards on 19 touches, and a TD.

Salmonson, the first defensive back on this list, racked up 112 total tackles in 2022. A deep safety with most of his film, he obviously can tackle, but he also has a nose for the football. He breaks on the ball well and gets his hands on plenty of footballs. His instincts and first step allow him to make plays on receivers who catch the ball underneath his coverage. When he creeps down near the line of scrimmage, he attacks the line of scrimmage. His tackling is solid – especially in space.

Yet another impressive Park of Cottage Grove defensive back, 5’10, 180 lb. free safety Brett Salmonson earned First Team All-District honors last fall after going off in the production department to the tune of 112 total tackles, 6 PBUs, 4 INTs, a FF, and a TFL. I’m a big fan of the tape, as Salmonson did a great job of staying around the football in pass coverage from the MOF. He did a good job of sticking his cleat in the ground and breaking up passes in front of him and in the second level of the field, and he also showed the speed to make a play on the ball when working underneath a pass. Also can make tackles around the box and in space and 1-on-1 settings while coming downhill in prototypical safety fashion. Balanced skillset for the safety position and has been hit up by a ton of DII and DIII programs this offseason. Augustana has gotten a visit so far. Go Wolfpack!

The 5’10, 170 lb. DB has made our weekly MN Top Performers list as a 2022 stat monster and has tallied 49 tackles, 3 picks, and a PBU so far this year. The free safety had a ballhawking game against Hopkins and made a beautiful pick on the second play of his midseason tape where he adjusts his coverage path to the QB’s eyes and runs a beautiful line to undercut a deep ball to an open WR. He’s also got some solid reps running the alley.
